Dark Side 'Cause It Looks Cool: The Failings of Moral Choice in Games

Feb 10th 2012 8:22PM (Joystiq)
Interestingly (or perhaps not), Overlord was the first game to leap to mind with uneven rewards for morality.

Of course, as a comedic "play as the bad guys" game, it doesn't even try to give weight to your choices like the epic RPGs do, but there are a few points where you can choose to steal something for yourself or save some NPCs (supposedly helping the sustainability of your newly-conquered empire). In those cases, the "evil" choice gives an immediate in-game benefit (more minions or gold) while the "good" choice has no other impact on the game (unless, of course, you count an achievement for always choosing the lesser evil through the game).

While it's not surprising that a game about conquering and looting gives no incentive to do the right thing, I noticed it at the time because every other game with hamfisted moral choices made sure they balanced out in some way.

GameStop sees majority of digital sales from cash; won't pursue used PC game sales

"We're actually growing [the downloadable content] market, because about half our DLC customers never purchased DLC previously. So, for game developers that want to sell more DLC, we're introducing gamers to DLC for the first time in our stores."

"So there," he added with a sneer. "Those publishers should stop whining about used game sales and trying to cut us out of the sale and be grateful we're selling their DLC for them."

Rhythm Heaven Fever review: Crazy into you

Feb 9th 2012 2:39PM (Joystiq)
Just to be obnoxiously contrary to the review, this is not the first time Rhythm Heaven has had multiplayer. There's a two-player arcade cabinet in Japan (which was imported to an arcade where I used to live). It had two-player versions of many of the original games, usually taking turns, and in true RH style gives a "love compatibility rating" for both players at the end of the sequence (which has more to do with matching each-other than doing well in the game).

I was hoping the multiplayer would be similar, and it's a bit disappointed it isn't. Actually, as much of an instant-buy it was to learn that this uses buttons only, it feels like a missed opportunity not to include that arcade mode, or others of the original set, using the sideways Wiimote configuration.

Rhythm Heaven Fever review: Crazy into you

@TehPeanut

As someone that played a ROM of the original Rhythm Tengoku, I was incredibly glad to hear that Rhythm Heaven Fever returns to simple button controls. The DS game was fun, but always felt less precise because of the controls. I still wish the original would be localized somehow (if it's released on the 3DS eShop, I will run out and buy a 3DS), because it felt so much better (even playing on my PSP) than the DS version, and now that I've stopped pirating games, I miss playing it.

That's on the side, along with the timer (which also migrated from the top screen).

You can see more of the gameplay here and get a better idea of how it works:

PSN releases: Scarygirl, Gotham City Impostors beta

Damn, that's a good deal. Instead of paying $50 for all those games, I could pay $50 for PS+ then $12.50 for the games!

Ben Heck invents controller-mounted Hot Pocket holder

Jan 24th 2012 1:52PM (Joystiq)
For those that aren't aware, Ben Heck is a well-known console modder, and has made things like laptop Xbox 360s and one-handed controllers for veterans.

I have a feeling this was more a product of needing to build something for his show and not being able to think of anything better than actual laziness.

Personally, I think I'll stick to eating during cutscenes and keeping napkins handy ;)
