Ignition L.A. studio moving to Austin

Dec 2nd 2010 11:44AM (Joystiq)
No, NOT unusual. Not unusual that any smart business, if able, will take themselves out of this crazy state whose continued increased taxing of businesses is driving so many of them to leave to NV, TX, UT, etc. who have a low tax burden on businesses and can allow them to expand.

Until CA figures out how to address its bloated government, it's 'nanny-state' welfare policies, and out of control spending, it's anti-business methods of outrageously taxing both small and large companies will drive businesses out of this state like Intel, McAfee, Toyota, Hilton, IBM, Denny's and hundreds of others.

I've lived in CA all my life and it's been great having so many gaming companies here in the past. But look at the trends, they are all getting out if they can.

Dance Central DLC to cost more than Rock Band's, Harmonix explains why

Jun 28th 2010 1:27PM (Joystiq)
WAIT WAIT WAIT! Something isn't right here...

As a choreographer myself, i understand and appreciate paying them to create the routine and mo-cap the moves. HOWEVER, I played this game at E3 and all the game is doing is linking (and repeating) canned moves, usually in one or two counts of 8, that can be (and was) used across nearly all the songs.

I can see the INITIAL expense of choreographing the moves and mo-capping them. But once they've amassed a library of dance moves, it'll be very easy to just link them together in different orders without paying a choreographer. Honestly, there's only so many dance moves you can do standing up in a confined living room space. They can also use pre-recorded voice overs from previous songs that said "Break it Down" or whatever. Heck they did all this way back with "Yourself Fitness!" game.

Other than that, "find the song, license the song...,integrate the animation, build the filter system, the flash cards..." should take the same effort as charting a song in Rock Band with all the different instruments, separating out the tracks, animating the band according to the song, etc.

So personally I don't think the price hike is justified FOR THE REASONS THEY STATE. I think they are just trying to insure similar profits for a game that won't have as much demand as Rock Band. If they said that, I wouldn't blame them and would totally understand that. But not for the weak excuse they made in this statement.

It's a really fun game though and I'm looking forward to owning it!

Midway creditors accept $1 million payout

I'm also hoping the Midway love will begin flowing in XBLA Game Room. Hopefully the rights to the original cabinet designs are attached to the games themselves so we don't get cabs looking like those ugly Konami ones...

New Game Room additions this Wednesday, Krome still developing Game Packs

May 4th 2010 12:08PM (Joystiq)
Haters, alla ya! Game Room is great for those of us that played these for real in the arcades and when they originally came out on consoles! The Time Warp feature is excellent and since I'll never be able to collect these game cabinets in real life, the virtual version is fun to arrange and put together. So far, the emulation is excellent, way better than the first XBLA releases of Tempest and Centipede a few year back. Those were terrible. I also like the challenges/leaderboard feature. Now I can watch replays of the top people and learn their strategies.

If GR can keep from releasing anymore of those lame generic cabinets like they did with the Konami games, it will have a great future for those of us who lived and/or appreciate gaming history. Now excuse me while I que up my Pitfall download...

'Block Party' boosts XBLA March sales by 41 percent

i would have loved to see the breakdown of Game Room game sales. Too bad. My guess would be Centipede and Tempest were the top sellers. Hopefully the Konami titles with their lame generic cabinets were at the bottom.

No new old games in Game Room until late April

Mar 30th 2010 2:18AM (Joystiq)
I like game room and think it has a lot of potential. many focus on the negatives but there's a lot to love. the time warp feature allows me to get much father into some of these *tough* arcade classics. when ms. pac-man eventually comes along, i may actually get to see the Act III cut scene! I love the ambient sounds of the arcade. It takes me back to those good ol 80's. I mix in my classic rock playlist and it makes it perfect! :)

Now what I really hate is the generic Konami cabinets! It totally blows the illusion of recreating a classic arcade. I've only bought the atari machines (not 2600) because its so great to see those iconic cabinets sitting in my virtual arcade. Please Krome, don't do that with the Midway and Taito games!

It was fun sitting on the couch and demoing the 2600 games with my 4 year old daughter. Never thought I'd get to do that in my life. She loved Combat!

Yes I'm very disappointed we have to wait until 'late april' to see new games. Hopefully it'll be the 20th or 21st and not the 29th or 30th...just fix those cabinets Krome!
