Mac 101: Pronouncing Mac OS X

Jan 6th 2011 4:10PM (TUAW.com)
If you're gonna troll the noobs and the fanboys, at least use a credible source.

via http://support.apple.com/kb/TA22541 : "The current version of Mac OS is Mac OS X (pronounced "Mac O-S ten")."

Push for Gmail: it's here, it works, and it's limited

The most obvious reason I can think of would be Apple's ActiveSync licensing agreement with Microsoft.

Push for Gmail: it's here, it works, and it's limited

Sep 22nd 2009 4:48PM (TUAW.com)
From the article: "You couldn't just set up your favorite mail client and get instant notifications [from Google] when mail arrived."

This is patently false. Gmail's IMAP implementation supports the "IDLE" command (part of the IMAP standard, IIRC), as does OS X's included Mail application. This allows for instant email notification (whether you call it "Push" or not). I've been using it for over a year and it works flawlessly.

The iPhone Mail application doesn't support the IDLE command, which is why the proprietary solutions are required.

The days of client-side spam filtering seem to be waning with things like Google Apps. Server-side is the way to go, IMO.

iDVD - black sheep of the iLife suite

Jun 26th 2009 1:42PM (TUAW.com)
I've never had any trouble with iDVD. The problem of "minute" capacity vs "storage" capacity is largely due to the need to convert that slideshow to a video file or to a series of menus (I forget how iDVD does it, exactly).

iDVD isn't the slickest DVD creation tool out there, but it's the _easiest_. If you want complete control over every aspect of the creation process, check out DVD Studio Pro. Just prepared for a *steep* learning curve.

Hulu begins encrypting HTML content to thwart non-browser apps

How long until all of the Boxee kids just get something like a Mac mini and hook it up to the TV?

What will sites like Hulu do then?

Engadget's recession antidote: win a pair of Audioengine A5 speakers!

I just bought a new house, and we actually need a new set of speakers for one room, so this would be perfect.

Apple sold the iBook at $999 for a while.
