Immersion is more about graphical quality and 5.1 surround sound than most people know. Granted, graphics draw you in to the experience but once the pretty pictures novelty comes to pass, you’re left with nothing more than the game play. Anyone who has played Red Steel would know what I’m talking about. It is by far one of the worst games I’ve played on any console but I'll be damned if I wasn’t drawn in to the experience because essentially I was pointing the gun, I was capping the bad guy. I felt like I was the one doing these things and that my friend at least for me, make up for more than any realistic looking enemy crabs.
If the whole pretty graphics make for better games motif where true, a game like Genji would have been rated through the roof...
Not that I want to dignify your post but I would like ask you a question.
By your definition games like but not limited to, Twilight Princess, Final Fantasy, God of War, Okami, Halo, Metroid Prime etc are not epic unless I play them on a SUPERZ OMG frweakingz HD 100" set on 360. That’s what you’re saying right? So like ummm when I eventually play Killzone for the PS3 that’s going to be a lot more better epic that GOW because it'll be running in super 1080p and not in lame 360 720p right? I mean that’s what you’re saying.
Gamers, I forgot that there is a direct correlation between epic games and the size of the screen I play them on. Also, all of you out there in internet land, go out and buy an 360 but make sure that you buy an HD TV because if you don’t you wont be able to enjoy Rainbow Six in all its epic 720p glory.
You’re either saying or implying that the system either doesn’t have any epic experiences or will lack epic experiences? I’d like to point you to your own contradiction citing Zelda in your post. Furthermore; making a generalized assumption on a system that hasn’t even been on store shelves for more than a month is dense.
The Wii has potential and from the early software on display I d say that it has more or equal potential to deliver on “epic” experiences that say, those other two platforms provide. The level of immersion is beyond what the other two consoles can provide and in the hands of talented developers we’ll be enjoying gaming on a whole other level.
How many people here have played the Wii, maybe 15 of you? Play the damn thing first before passing judgment on its controls. I’ve played it on several occasions and I feel that it takes immersion further than graphics. The feel of actually doing something rather than pushing a button is very fun. Comment on the experience after actually giving it a shot, if after that you’re not convinced then at least you’re making an informed decision.
Gears most definitely does not have its gameplay nailed. It is a highly enjoyable game mostly becuz of its gorgeous presentation. There are moments where the AI makes you scrath your head at how stupid the locust move/react. I agree that its visuals definitely make the game more enjoyable but all I could think about while playing it was how much I wish it were controlled on a wiimote.
If you’re going to argue about the graphical prowess of a game that has been for all intents and purposes ported from a GCN game then you’re missing the point entirely. While I do wish I had that super shiny next gen finish on Zelda I’m at least content that I'll be looking at a very pretty game. Last time I checked I was happy with last gens visuals (RE4, Halo2, etc.) If Zelda is broken, falls flat or whatever the writer wants to claim, at least base a substantial argument that goes beyond superficial fanboy flame bait.
While the holiday is important to all three consoles, I think what will be more important are the six months after the launches of the Wii and PS3. The flow of quality software should be what defines this console race. Microsoft has had a head star but tons of gamers I know have been waiting for the releases of the two remaining companies to put out their hardware.
"Again, to be clear, I'm not saying the Wii won't be fun. I bet it will. My buddy, who has played it for a few hours, has assured me as much. But I don't think it will be this breakthrough to non-gamers that a lot of people like to say it will be."
I should only have to point at the structure that was in place for the DS. Quality software will always drive console sales. Some people are also forgetting that Nintendo isn’t only catering to the casual gamer but to the hardcore crowd as well. Once you introduce something to someone they are a lot more receptive to said experience once theyre familiar with it... which could in turn convert the casual into the hardcore. From the reactions of people I’ve spoken to who have been hands on with the system(not nintendrones) I come away feeling that Nintendo has a winner on their hands not because of the intuitive controls but because of the experience it provides.
I think once everyone actually plays around with the remote they'll either get it or move on. It really is easy to get lost in the games (in a good way). When you play it, make all the claims you want, until then you’re all just speculating...I’ve played it and I loved it. Will the motion sensing controls work for every type of game? I don’t know but from the stuff I’ve played, it’s played much better than anything else I’ve played on 360 to this point. You will forget about graphics and button combinations and just play… that’s what happened for me and I’m sure it’ll be the same for most others, its just fun!
Have you played it? Because I had the same concerns until I played 5 different games at the Nintendo store in Sept. After playing with the darn thing for a few hours I believe in the system and will definitely pick it up. I see where you’re going with this and I may agree that on certain levels you're right... but again, it’s not only about it being intuitive but also about truly sucking in the gamer...

Careful with those ancient Zelda screenshots! You'll poke an eye out with images that sharp. [update 1]
