Tak, the mention during the keynote was pointing out how puny the game market is compared to other markets Apple's involved in (more specifically, it was the smallest out of all the markets on the slide, with cellphones practically being bigger than all the others combined). Considering it's also a market that's shared by three big players already, I think it was more proof that Apple _won't_ be making any inroads there than the opposite.
"I'm confused, why give away that many PS3s? maybe five at each store sure, but 125 all together seems like a lot to give away." - nugget
Circuit City appears to be putting on a sizeable PS3 promotional event, they already mention radio stations being lined up. I'm sure they got Sony to subsidize those giveaway units. Even if they're still losing a little money on them, look at it this way: if you showed up to one of these things with $600 put aside for your PS3, and all of a sudden you had a free one, you'd probably buy a ton of games and accessories with that extra money, which is what retailers _really_ make money on.
"I have to say they lack the certain snarkiness and irony of the original adds. These things are just game centric and not much else." -MO
Actually, motivational posters are generally not snarky or ironic. I think you're referring to that company that makes "Demotivational" posters, which are a spoof of the original product.
"reduction in cost != reduction in price. just an increase in the profit margin for MS" -shady
Actually, it doesn't even mean that. It means Microsoft loses less on each Xbox. 15-20% cheaper to make still puts them in the red. Don't see why they'd set themselves back again by dropping the price. They're still cheaper than Sony.
