It has a wireless controller, HDMI, plus a 256 MB mem unit which the core never had. Add the 5 full games and you're well above the original core's value.
Anyone b*tchin' about BC and lack of a hard drive, go to eBay and search for "MICROSOFT XBOX 360 20GB HARD DRIVE" now. You'll find a new one on sale for $54.99 USD. Add about $10 for shipping and you're still under the Premium price, plus you get 5 full games (Boom Boom Rocket and Uno's a blast. My wife loves Luxor 2, so definitely a casual's game in every sense of the word).
Halo 3, Mass Effect, Bioshock, Orange Box, PGR4, and so on. No excuses not to "Jump In." Perfect time as any as I see it.
Really Nick? People are "leaving" MS? Uh, no, MS will remain a powerhouse of publishing for years to come. MS has learned owning studios are probably less profitable and more of a headache (e.g. Rare) than publishing IP's (Gears of War, Mass Effect) and paying for exclusives (too many to name). You think developers are going to "leave" MS in '08? The one with the largest install base, who has the best software tools, and whose owners buy more games than the two other consoles combined?
You must be out of your f*ckin mind.
The only pattern I see here is continued success for the 360. Haters keep on hatin'...
When casuals find out the $400 PS3 can't play their collection of GTA, FF, and God of War titles, they'll put off buying it until they save enough money for the 60/80 gb model. They'll hear about the BR player, Wi-Fi, HDMI, etc., but when the salesperson tells 'em, "It can't play any of your PS2 or PS1 games, but the higher-end model can," it'll turn off most simply because BC is that much more important to them.
Fanboyism aside, this is why MS is going to bury Sony this generation. Sony's cash cow and the only profit they've had in years, the PS2, will eventually come to an end.
MS on other hand is finally showing profitability. Their gamble (entering the console business) will eventually pay off in the long run. A successful movie/tv download service, good console sales, an attractive price point (will eventually go down further) and strong software sales are going to keep MS in the game.
The decision to stay out of the HD-DVD/BR race was also a good one since downloadable content is an accepted alternative to physical media. Even Sony can't deny that great downloadble games, e.g. Warhawk and GT5 Prologue, don't need Blu-ray.
Even with compelling PS3 titles next year, the gap between the 360 and PS3 will only get larger (Wii's already a runaway success, the iPod of gaming for non-gamers). When MS enters an area, expect them to try and dominate, and that they will...
BTW, the whole RROD thing hasn't and won't affect sales.
@ Zaphod Beeblebrox "At least when the PS3 has the AAA games, I will be able to play them on a reliable, working PS3 and you? Your 360 will be red ringing again and again and again and again...."
OMG, did you just mention Afrika and WarDevil in your misspelled list of games? You don't even know WTF they're about and you listing those as AAA? Wow, you forgot Lair... You also bring up that tired "RROD!" argument again. Well, let me bring up the tired "What happened to rumble being last gen?" and "PS3 has no games" back at ya.
Let's see, no rumble until next year. No Home until then either. Christmas '07 for the PS3's gonna' really suck. Nothing's going to save it from getting decimated by the Wii and 360. In 2008, no one might even care about the PS3.
Yes, I can passionately say that I want Sony to fail horribly this gen. Even better, I hope they leave the gaming industry completely. BTW, if anyone's spreading the FUD, Sony's the best at it.
