Is the AirPort Extreme worth the price?

Apr 4th 2011 10:16AM (TUAW.com)
IPv6 readiness, and wake on demand are two big reasons I went with the Airport extreme. The power savings from being able to keep my Mac Pro asleep, while remaining accessible have probably paid for mine. Add in MobileMe, and wake on demand even works over the Internet.

Sony Online Entertainment confirms layoffs, studio closings [Updated]

Mar 31st 2011 2:52PM (Massively)
Best of luck to any affected by this, and heres hoping for a quick turnaround on new jobs elsewhere in the industry. Those remaining have a tough job ahead of them to help turn around the company, but that effort will be well worth it. SOE was one of the companies that helped establish the MMO market as a viable one, and it would be a shame to see them go.

G4TV goes behind the scenes at Turbine

Mar 17th 2011 12:32PM (Massively)
Always cool to see behind the scenes a bit. Hopefully the cube farm is working out well for them, seemed a bit tightly packed in there.

Did have to go watch the video on G4tv.com though, the embed here seems broken for me.

THQ: Warhammer MMO will cost $50 million, uDraw still making bank

Mar 11th 2011 1:38AM (Joystiq)
@Epoque THQ acquired Vigil back in March 2006, well before Darksiders was even announced. THQ licensed the rights to a W40k MMO in early 2007. So the cost shouldn't include anything related to the acquisition.

Microsoft hiring for 'next-generation console' engineers

Mar 8th 2011 1:58PM (Joystiq)
Hopefully the next XBox will offer less choice. Microsoft really enjoyed the nickel and dime strategy this past round with choice, to the point of harming the market.

"Choice" of hard drive or no hard drive = crippled base units, and expensive for no good reason HD add ons.

"Choice" of WiFi or no WiFi = Overly expensive official bulky external adaptor until the most recent redesign.

"Choice" of HD video = HD-DVD addon that flopped, and no choice for BluRay. DVD only in the box limiting game size to the same as previous generation.

"Choice" of rechargeable batteries on controllers = higher cost for a controller then even Sony's PS3 controllers when adding in the battery

"Choice" of online service to game = Charging for matchmaking and online play, even when the game is hosted on someones XBox.

I really want less choice next time around.

Is your city one of the top ten worst speed traps in America?

Feb 22nd 2011 9:27PM (Autoblog)
The federal standards for highways say that a driver must not cross a solid white line if it is on the driver side, and it is discouraged if it is on the passenger side.

Is your city one of the top ten worst speed traps in America?

"Jayson Luber, the traffic reporter for 7News at ABC affiliate KMGH, said officers will even wait for drivers riding in the exit lane who dart back into other lanes at the last minute, and nab them for crossing a white line."

Good. I really believe cops need to be out enforcing all the driving laws, and not just speeding. People making last second corrections and diving back onto the highway are likely to be a higher cause of wrecks then someone going 5 over the limit on the same highway. Start enforcing following distances, turn signal usage, and proper lane usage, and maybe driving won't be so stressful. Really tired of watching F150 drivers park themselves in the far left lane of a freeway, then swerving across 3 lanes and a solid white line to get off at an exit.

Smedley: DC Universe Online is SOE's fastest seller yet

Jan 24th 2011 4:27PM (Joystiq)
@Dlord Nope. And there isn't a technical reason for it. SOE people have stated it was a Sony business issue. Gameplay wise since it's not an FPS, there really shouldn't be any keyboard/mouse advantages over a controller.

Mac OS X 10.6.6 introduces subtle changes to Boot Camp

Jan 17th 2011 2:15PM (TUAW.com)
Boot Camp Assistant 3.0.4 (the version included by 10.6.6) appears to be bugged. According to people on the Apple discussions site, support is indicating that 3.0.4 was supposed to only be for the newer MacBook Air models, and on other systems will fail to download drivers. I've seen it fail on a 2008 Mac Pro, a 2010 MacBook Pro, and a 2009 Mac Mini.

The workaround is to tell it you already have drivers, and to use the Snow Leopard disc as normal. Support has been telling people to look for a proper fix sometime soon.

Odds are, this got slipped in accidentally in the rush to get 10.6.6 out for the App Store.

Itagaki's Valhalla Game Studios sharing tech with Relic for Devil's Third

Jan 13th 2011 2:02PM (Joystiq)
@senorwhoppy Thats really old (2005). THQ picked up the trademark and rights to Homeworld in 2007.

http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/49769 - initial story when people noticed the trademarks changing hands.

http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2007/11/thq-confirms-ownership-of-the-homeworld-brand.ars - THQ later confirmed that yes, they own the rights.
