Feb 12th 2006 2:07PM (Joystiq)Seriously, if people don't see professional football or baseball "games" as a child's pursuit, I don't think the word is necessarily the problem. I tend to think the problem will take care of itself as the current generation of gamers grows up.
Blog debate: online PC gaming vs online console gaming
Jan 7th 2006 12:00PM (Joystiq)But for what it costs to buy a high-end gaming rig, I could probably buy a budget laptop, plus two or three game consoles.
From where I'm sitting, the PC's biggest gaming strength is not a technical advantage or any kind of "desk vs. sofa" philosophy, it's the ability to play small, independently developed games (shareware and such). It's difficult to make a mom-and-pop console game these days. (Though maybe Xbox Live Arcade will change that?)
I think MMORPGs will have their day on consoles. It's been an uphill battle so far because they've required too many add-ons (to play Final Fantasy X on the PS2, you needed to buy the game with its hard drive AND a network adapter if you didn't have one already) or were perceived as half-assed versions of PC games (like PS2 Everquest).
