Just got the ring of death last week. Ive had the console since about a month after launch. About 40% of the people i know who have a 360 have had the rings.

To make the first problem go away you need to end your conversation. When you are done chatting with someone click the track wheel and and select "End Conversation". When you do that no more login/out messages.

I'm not seeing the second problem you are. All my messages get archived in my gmail regardless if i do them from my blackberry or my desktop client (GAIM). You have to turn the setting on in your gmail to make this happen.
