PS3 peripherals priced: $50 for a Sixaxis

Oct 19th 2006 6:11PM (Joystiq)
Hm.

I didn't like $50 controllers when they came out on the 360.

I won't like $50 controllers on the PS3.

I won't like $50 controllers on the Wii.

So as far as price is concerned, it's a wash between the systems. I just feel sorry for anyone that wants to have four players in the same household; you could buy a PS2 and a game for the cost of 3 additional controllers.

How important is storage capacity for today's games?

Along with space you also need the speed to deliver content through the bottleneck (in this case, optical drives) to the faster components like memory and CPUs.

Heaven forbid that games become 50 GB only to plague us with horrendous load times because developers are too stubborn to look at alternatives to software bloat.

It's a trite example, but the PSP is a good example of great disc space that comes with a trade-off (GameSpot had a cold boot load time article on the subject).

Explainer: Wii's push, Xbox 360's pull [update 1]

Meh. This demonstrates nothing, except for what has been known to retailers for years.

The margins on hardware have always traditionally hovered around 3 to 5 percent on average for all consoles. The margin on the PS2 at launch was approximately 2.9%, or $8.70.

The strategy for all three companies is the same. Sell games. Make money.

Role-playing titles that made a "quantum leap"

I am so happy to see Fallout and Planescape at the top.

Planescape indeed has to be the best written RPG I've ever played. The plot twist (well, you know, THAT one) made me literally fall out of my chair.

Wizardry would have been nice up there, and System Shock probably could have replaced Deus Ex, but at least Looking Glass got credit under the entry of "Ultima".

Overall a refreshing list.

Where's Sony's 'Major Nelson?'

Oct 5th 2006 6:11PM (Joystiq)
Nintendo has Reggie Fils-Aimes. He's charismatic, believes in the product, but definitely takes a pro-consumer approach in the way that he addresses issues raised about Nintendo products.

Sony has um, Hirai, Tretton, and uh, Kutaragi. None of these men are particularly charismatic (I have heard Tretton speak in person at a manager's conference in days gone, and his speech was neither informative nor enthralling).

The problem with this trio is that they have been constantly feeding the gaming media with sound bites that make it easy to put an anti-Sony spin on just about any attached story. Said sound bites (and if you read gaming news on the web, you've heard them all) have been used to construct an anti-consumer Sony that firmly believes you will buy the product regardless of what it is.

While I personally wouldn't find Major Nelson a reason to purchase a 360 over any other system, I find his site interesting if only because it offers another avenue to find out what is new on Xbox Live without actually logging in. Let's face it, most official corporate websites lag behind the actual launch of products in the gaming world (a mild irony, really).

So if Sony wants to go that route, great. But I don't think it will make a difference in terms of sales at the end of the day.

Mark Rein says second-gen GoW on 360 looks better than first-gen PS3 titles

Since when did 10 or even 12.5 hours become short for an action or adventure game?

God of War was an epic 8 to 10 hours long the first time through.

Metal Gear Solid was about the same.

Oh, Devil May Cry ... a 5 hour game. But if you ask me, its brevity doesn't make it any less a fun action game.

This assumes no additional or extra content, because some people categorically ignore "secret" content and multiplayer can add time and value. So what's changed over the years?
