Japanese hardware sales, 15 Jan - 21 Jan: continued slump edition

Jan 27th 2007 8:25AM (Joystiq)
Just so you guys know, the "supply lines" statement really only applies to the Wii and DS as there are no reported shortages of PS3 at all (according to Gamasutra/everyone else). One store even lowered the 20 gig PS3 to $329 in an effort to get it out of their stores (Don Quixote).

The PS3 lifetime sales in Japan are ~575,000 despite Sony having shipped 1 million so until we pass that million mark there is no reason to suspect shortages there. At the current rate that should happen sometime in the summer.

(And yes, I know that "supply issues" applies to Gears of War as well, but that's not hardware now is it)

Rumor: PS3 hardware "slow and broken"?

bladestar, andir, etc...

Don't be knocking Mr. Grant on his choice of articles. I would personally think it strange to not see such a "buzzing" story on Joystiq as I had already seen it on other sites. Plus it was being brought up in the comments section of another article, which was really getting things off on a tangent.

Besides, anything is better than Vlad's self-righteous editorials on the state of gaming journalism.

Wii to get unique Spider-Man 3 version

May 2nd 2006 9:43PM (Joystiq)
vc- There you go again, assuming it is just a simple thing to port from PS3 to 360 and it is some completely impossible task to create a similar game for Wii. Do you not realize that much of the cost is in creating the graphics, and that it wouldn't be too hard to transfer all of those 3D models, downgrading them obviously, to a Wii game?

It would take a small, dedicated team a fairly short time to recreate the game for Wii, and you have the chance to sell two copies to the same person! You really don't get it, do you.

Wii to get unique Spider-Man 3 version

May 2nd 2006 8:35PM (Joystiq)
This post was clearly written by someone who doesn't understand Nintendo fans (Wii-ners). The whole point of the Nintendo's new console is that it is better to have a new way to play games than it is to play in HD.

I for one don't think I would notice any difference on my measly 23" SDTV between a 360 game and a Wii game except that the 360 game would have small, unreadable text due to my "sub-par" setup.

I don't care if Mr. Ransom-Wiley doesn't like Nintendo's strategy. I don't care if he posts derogatory or doubtful statements about Nintendo's strategy. I do think, however, that this post is offensive to anyone who agrees with what Nintendo is trying to do, and that it encourages Wii-ners to find some other place to get their news.

And for the record, it is probably just as difficult to port games from the 360 to the PS3 as it would be to make a similar game for the Wii using fundamentally different controls but re-using old 3-D models and textures. As has been mentioned, it is also more probable that someone might buy the PS3 and Wii versions than that they would buy the PS3 and 360 versions.

Animal Crossing bundle drops price

Sorry to post off topic, but Mr. Hinkle this "trying to be funny" thing you're doing with recent posts (this one and the Phantom Hourglass one recently) isn't working. I realize just posting bland news items can get boring, but if the post is more about trying to be funny than it is the actual news that's probably pushing it.

This isn't We heart David Hinkle dot com.

Thoughts on the Nintendo Wii video

May 2nd 2006 3:06PM (Joystiq)
Go ahead and sit this one out, dash. Anyone gamer who really wanted one in the first place won't be put off by what Nintendo felt they had to do to broaden the market to "trendy" people.

They reached out with the Game Boy Micro and hardcore gamers whined about it being an overpriced, stylish SP. Did Nintendo care? No, they brought in new customers and that was the intent.

Nintendo is gambling that their console will become so popular that everyone will want one, and after "everyone" has one the name won't sound so weird anymore. That's when you can buy one, dash, because at that point owning a Wii will not make you "uncool."

Kojima's offering shown at E3

Maybe it's just me, but I don't think that postcard looks "girl friendly" in any way. I would think that the overall feel of the postcard would hint at the overall feel of the game, so I doubt this is hyping up a "My Little Ponies: Assault on Moo-Moo Farm" type of game.

Free expression isn't always a good thing

My first (and only, really) time on Wi-Fi with Mario Kart one of the racers had a hand flipping me off for his icon and a profane name. If I were a concerned parent I might get a little upset about something like that, but maybe Nintendo should just incorporate a "never play against that jerk" option so that after enough people quit playing against him he just gives up on Wi-Fi altogether.

Japanese sales charts, April 17-23: Hello, Mother

Apr 29th 2006 9:21AM (Joystiq)
It's good to see that one of the "flagship" titles for the Xbox 360 (Ninety Nine Nights) is at least having some effect on the number sold. For a long time they didn't break 1500 units sold and were consistently below GameCube numbers. I think they have beaten the GameCube for at least three weeks in a row now.

I seriously hope Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon are at least ten times better than Ninety Nine Nights, though, or the Xbox 360 won't ever pass even the PS2 in sales.

It's also nice to see Mother 3 have such an impact on SP and GBM sales. It looks like Micro sales tripled over last week.

Forum chatter: Japan responds to Wii

Apr 28th 2006 2:34PM (Joystiq)
In Chile there is a pretty bad slang phrase "no me g?" (pronounced wā-ē’). It comes from the "big egg" huev?which means a lot of things there, kinda like mofo can mean a lot of things in the states. The phrase is a very vulgar way of saying "quit pulling my leg!" I know wee isn't exactly g?, but that's what it reminded me of.

I'm not sure that will matter, though, since the letter w isn't found in any native Spanish words and most people (that I've ever met) in Chile pronounce it with a "b" sound.
