From the very article linked: He had a computer server in his apartment in the northern port city of Gijón, from which the group attacked the Web sites of the Sony PlayStation online gaming store. ... It was not immediately clear if the group had been the sole, or even the main, perpetrator of the recent attacks on Sony. About a dozen Sony Web sites and services around the world have been hacked; the biggest breaches forced the company, which is based in Tokyo, to shut down its popular PlayStation Network for a month beginning in April.
@Galford The store is what contained the stolen information, hence the concern of CC #'s being stolen. That attack and unathorized access is what caused the downtime, as far as I understand it.
@teknobeavr That was one of the most insane and irrational conspiracy theories I've seen on Joystiq. And that includes the ridiculousness of Sony vs. MS, Sony vs. their own customers...
Please A) Re-read the government statements on cyber attacks as an act of war. They only apply to organized government or large organizational attacks. In addition, Sony is a JAPANESE company, and not a part of the US FEDERAL GOVERNMENT OR MILITARY. In no way could the attack be construed as an attack on the US. B) Use patience instead of making a leap of logic. There is very little info on this as of yet, and none of it points to any sort of military involvement. Or even FBI at this point, though that wouldn't surprise me. Also, the FBI is NOT a branch of the military. C) Read the article. These individuals are allegedly connected to a number of attacks entirely within the borders of Spain. That means Spanish authorities have likely been targeting them since well before the PSN attacks. Spain is a country that has it's own police force. I'm sure they had a bit more reason to be involved than the US Military...
A breakdown would be more interesting. Lumping my mother and myself into the same category of 'gamer' is pretty blah. She's just under 50, and plays a few facebook games. I'm almost 30, game regularly on a 360, PS3, Wii, PC and phone. I'd be more interested in a break down of at least mobile, social and console/PC. Those numbers and trends will tell you where the market is really growIng.
Also - while I'm sure Steam has a fair chunk of that digital realm, don't forget the insane amount of money in social gaming - Zynga isn't valued at bazillions of dollars for nothing. (I mean, except quality content... Nothing there... Ba-zing!) And those CoD addons sold like gangbusters. And XBLA sales are way up...
@misterAKA Given how much cable TV and HBO costs, that would actually be an absolutely phenomenal deal and I'd jump all over it. And this is from someone that hasn't had cable in years. It'd be cheap at $30 a month with HBO, ESPN, TBS, and the basic Fox, ABC, NBC, CBS.
