What's in the name "video game"

Dec 20th 2006 6:31PM (Joystiq)
Like others have said, I think we just need to drop the "video" part. Just call them games -- it's a shorter name, and honestly, it's more accurate too. Sure, it won't change the public perception of games being for kids, but people don't always associate word games, board games, the Olympic games, etc. with children, so it seems very unlikely that the word "game" is the source of all our problems.

Quite honestly, I think the only way anyone can change this perception is by making more games aimed at an older age group. And no, I do NOT mean M rated games necessarily. Filling a game with blood and boobies doesn't make it mature, it makes it appealing to little boys. What we need are more games that cover subject matter that actually will appeal more to adults than to children. Subject matter that the average kid might even find boring. I think there is a market for that type of game -- potentially a very big market -- but few companies are willing to risk alienating the lucrative teenage male demographic.

Are some topics off-limits for "serious" games?

Maybe I'm weird, but I would LOVE to see a serious game involving the Nazis. Why? Because I'm sick of them just being cartoonishly evil bad guys. A serious game could give them some depth, some humanity... something to make us wonder why good people are capable of such terrible things.

Kristanna Loken dumps Uwe Boll

Nov 9th 2006 11:07PM (Joystiq)
Hrm... based on what little I've heard (from a guy who purportedly knows Uwe Boll), Kristanna Loken did indeed turn down the role because of her prior commitment to that TV show. Of course, it's possible that she had other reasons as well, but given that she said she wanted to do BloodRayne 2 AFTER the first BloodRayne tanked, I kinda get the impression that she doesn't care about his reputation as a film maker.

In any case, I'm looking forward to seeing what this new actress can do. I'm an unashamed Uwe Boll fangirl, and as I've said elsewhere on the internet, the mere concept of vampire cowboys traipsing around British Columbia with a scantily clad Norwegian girl in hot pursuit amuses me far more than it should.

Uwe Boll to make BloodRayne 2, anger more gamers

I actually visited the set of Postal today and got to talk to Uwe briefly before he ran off to do important director stuff. He's a really great guy, and I'm not being sarcastic there -- I have a huge amount of respect for him, and from what little I saw of Postal, I think the movie might actually be worth watching.

Back on topic, I actually heard about BloodRayne 2 from the man himself a couple of weeks ago when I ran into him after his boxing match. He mentioned that it would be set in the Wild West, and when I tried to press him to set it in Nazi Germany instead, he said that would be the setting for BloodRayne 3. I then took the opportunity to encourage him to fill BloodRayne 3 with lesbian vampire nazis wearing nothing but armbands. He laughed at the idea, but didn't say if he'd use it.... so if you guys ever see a big pile of lesbian vampire nazis in an Uwe Boll movie, you'll know who to thank ;)
