Although it hurts resale opportunities, at least having something linked to your Steam account allows you to play offline, if you choose. It limits games to the person who bought them, or the person who was gifted the game. Updates are automatically applied to the games, and it can offer massive discounts from time to time. At least in my experience, it doesn't matter if you install your games 10 times because of constant hardware failures (I'm exaggerating).
