While the Arena does force you to use pre-made sets of weapons and armor (to keep it from being way too easy), you do still use your character.

When you defeat a monster in the arena, you gain monster coins which you can transfer to the main game for use in buying special sets of equipment.

Every review for the Wii does not need to include "graphics are good... FOR A Wii GAME".
