The Secret World pre-order packages feature beta access, lifetime sub, and more

Apr 3rd 2012 4:36PM (Massively)
So let me get this straight..

If i want everything (which i dont but just for funsies)

49,99 for the game
14,99 for the initial pack (since no where does it state this is included int he other packages)
199,99 for the "grand master" thing
9,99 per character slot
9,99 per reserved name (which is pointless since i dont see this game becomming big)

Lets say i want 1 extra name reserve and character slot and all the other things.. i need to pay *drums* 284,99 euros.. around half a rent / half of a reasonably decend computer.. are they serious!? I get that i maybe spend 1500 euros on wow over all the years but this is PRE order..

This game needs to compete with a free to play game called gw2 and that is free to play for 49,99.. yes it has some additions but the cash shop there offers complete gear sets..

No EA after SW:TOR/ MA3 im not buying one more game from you. Untill you fix those first i even feel sorry for BW EA as publisher is now releasing two mmorpgs to compete against each other..

Blizzard opens the Mists of Pandaria floodgates for 100,000 annual passholders

Another 100k have gone out and later tonight another 100k will go out. Which means a total of 300k beta invites in 2 days.

Oh true true, but still thats a lot more then what current servers on life are handling. If there server tech has become this good i would like them to start merging servers into 500k servers. Would be cheaper and easier, mind i do mean with a special sharding system.. not that we end up with 500k people standing next to each other in the auction house. But a similar system to what Tera uses. With different layers.

Honestly im quite amased.. over 4 servers they manage to get 300k people in. If they dont increase the number of servers and they finally end with 1m over 4 roughly 250k per server. What does this mean that blizzard's server tech has become this good that they manage to spread out the load or shard the players up ?

Honestly im quite amased seeing how a normal ingame server holds now what 10k people? (time for server mergers! )

The Soapbox: Voice chat is the worst thing ever

Mar 20th 2012 1:54PM (Massively)
I get where you are comming from with this post. But voice chat also has so many good aspects about it. Communication is far easier, and it feels more personal. You can quickly notices in what tone somebody speaks a sentence.

Also the point made about roleplaying and immersion i need to disagree with. Raiding in most MMO's now a days has almost nothing to do with immersion anymore in my opinion. It become a thing to do with guild members/friends. And its objective now a days doesnt feel anymore like its trying to tell you a story. While this maybe still is a design goal from game developers this aspect has been lost for me ages ago.

Next to this all, most MMO's are based arround pressing keys on your keyboard. Meaning half of your keys is used for something already. While i get that typing would be a possibility, its highly annoying. And you pretty much have to stop doing everything you are currently doing as raider/raid leader.

In the end for me voice chat feels as a must for raiding atleast. And coordinated PvP. Simply for the reason typing out tactics/typind during a boss fight etc. while possible is highly unpractical and causes more problems. Another thing to note on this regarding the immersion is, most mmo's only show say in chat bubbles. So raiding would not even be visible to the normal world if you would be dead serious about RP.

Finally i think its simply the best way we have now, it works well even if it has its drawbacks. The same applies for typing everything out.

The Daily Grind: Do social media tie-ins annoy you?

Facebook simply should die a painfull death..

I hate people using it in this way for free promotion. Its a cheap way forcing people who hate the privacy *peep* facebook is to get a facebook account. And while im no better since i actually participate in this stuff. I dont like it, if i had a choise i would not use it. But seeing how Tera/Guild wars 2/ Tribes Ascend etc. etc. all handled this situation. By forcing it onto people.

It for me is a put off, but i still do it. Which makes me i guess no better. If i really had a choise, and saying " just dont use it then " simply is not a solution. So better not post anything on it. And just use it for these small things is "okay" i guess.

In a situation like this one there should have been the option to view it on a normal site if you signed up for the beta. And the people who didnt, could watch it this way then. That would have been a better way to handle it.

Diablo 3 emerges from hell May 15

Mar 15th 2012 6:14PM (Joystiq)
@Cranky Penguin Nothing is really scary about this. It only is a quite strong DRM since none of the character data, item data, PvP, achievements (account wide), mob info, mob pathing, npc, npc items sold, Auction house (gold and money) Are in the client. All of this info is only on the server.

And since its a free to play game. Its only better, blizzard can easily change stats for 1 item accros the whole game by just adding the value on the server without ever having to update the client.

Its to say the first step blizzard is taking towards Cloud gaming, which is where all the games in the future are heading.

No longer can a game be pirated, full income to the publisher etc. Its simply like galei (?) online etc. Its safe, it works extremely well (if you have the internet connection) and it for the person him/herself is also much better.

You never ever have to upgrade a PC anymore and the only things it needs is pretty much:

-Graphics card
-Network card
-Some really small processor.

All of these things can be put into a thing the size of a BIG usb stick (like the english school project now does. All those small USB pc's)

@ubertrance Diablo 3 is free to play yes. But it does require you to be connected to the internet always. Since you, mobs, npcs, items etc are all generated on the server side and are not included in the client side.

SWTOR's lead PvP designer answers community questions

@Professer More or less his own fault, he caused all the problems. If he was really the `lead` designer he would have never let that thing called Ilum through.

Blizzard laying off 600 staff globally [Updated]

Feb 29th 2012 1:54PM (WoW)
Its sad for the people affected by this. Thats for sure, was it completely unexpected that not.
The game lost close to 2 million subs. Because of presure from investors they probably where orderd to resort and clean up where they could, resulting in this.
