Silent Hill: Downpour review: When you're strange

Mar 14th 2012 6:47AM (Joystiq)
*Vague spoiler warning for Shattered Memories*

I have to disagree with one point in the article, where it states that Shattered Memorie's town of Silent Hill doesn't play a very large role in tormenting the players. Unless the argument is being made that it was more our...er...time with the therapist (to avoid spoilers) that was the cause of torment, I felt that the town did a pretty good job of mucking things up for Harry.

I can't vouch for every possible way to play through the game, but my play through trying to be a good person, loving father, etcetera led to everything from the town making me believe a woman I cared for had died to revealing haunting secrets about Cheryl's drastic and painful downfall once her father left her.

There were scenes where the visions of Cheryl afraid or in pain haunted Harry, and places where you were put in a situation with the town repeatedly changing things to make certain that you couldn't escape (or at least, not without sacrificing someone else). There were repeated instances where other people continually spiraled out of control, losing more and more of themselves along the way as a result of both the choices Harry had to make and the town changing things up on them (which is even more poignant once you learn the twist in the story), and even something so simple as a house that should of been yours belonging to another family.

All in all, I felt like Shattered Memories did a wonderful job of throwing Harry's past and his mistakes in his face at every available opportunity. Oh, also there were the phone calls and the messages that continually threw doubt as to the kind of man Harry really was or could have been.

Now, I'm not terribly far in Downpour, so perhaps the town takes more ire with Murphy than it did Harry, but SM certainly didn't play nice either >_

Ong-Bak wants to fight you in a new video game from Studio Hive

I will buy the living daylights out of this game. In a world where we have action games like Yakuza, Heavenly Sword, God of War and more, I don't see how this could be terrible. And, we sorely need a resurgence of the beat em' up genre.

Kingdom Hearts 3D Dream Drops into America and Europe next year

@Lnds500 And therein lies the problem...

Kingdom Hearts is a great series, it's just a crying shame that you have to own four to six different systems to understand it.

Sony: Vita will support multiple PSN accounts, each tied to individual memory cards

That...actually sounds kinda awesome. I mean, cost wise it's a bad idea, but it's a decent compromise. I'm getting the first edition bundle and a 32 GB card; I can use my 32 for my main games, the 4 it comes with for my one Euro game, and maybe pick up an 8 at some point for JPN games depending on how many of my UMD's make it on Japan's transfer service.

I think adding in how much you save via passport and the digital discount, the cards will pay for themselves after a while. That, and I'm probably being affected by years if gaming building up a correlation to having real life key cards to get into locked doors >_

Skyrim tips (for waiters)

Awesome story Luddy, thanks for sharing it! I'm of a firm mind that gamers have to stick together, it's awesome to hear little tales like this or of the support gamers showed Chris Hu when he lost his home to a fire.

At the cost of sounding kinda rude, er, don't look at the reveal trailers?

Love Plus to add a third dimension on 3DS

@Wonkuoysseleht

I was just in Japan in June, they have at least six or seven of these games for girls, and just about every console has a slew of dating sims for both genders. It was really hard to find an RPG while I was there that wasn't a dating sim, and pretty much every cool looking samurai or ghost hunting detective game was actually just a dating sim for girls >_<

That said, it's still kinda creepy...

lol, right, what he said. I hadn't realized I had to go to my e-mail and confirm when I want to post a message, hence the delay.

I think this actually is the second one. Under gamefaqs they have this listed as the same game as the second Monster Farm.
