Microsoft to reward Xbox Live achievers with freebies

Feb 6th 2007 8:20PM (Joystiq)
31k points, but no love because I live in Canada.
DOH! Come on MS, give up something...we love you up here in the frozen north.

PS3 driving Blu-ray movie sales, outpacing HD-DVD

Feb 5th 2007 8:38PM (Joystiq)
HD DVD are loosing ground as there are about 20 HD DVD movies scheduled for release this Spring, compared to about 60 for Blu-Ray. Also important to note that most HD DVD tiles are re-releases. Hard to win a format wars that way. I may have to purchase a PS3 just to watch Blu-Ray.

Virtual Console vigilantes gain ground in Super Mario World

Feb 5th 2007 3:58PM (Joystiq)
I find it sad, that in the 10 days since I had my Wii, I cannot find a single game worth playing besides Wii Sports (I have tried Wario, Zelda, Sponge Bob and Rayman and all where quite boring). The only games that I foresee buying this year for the Wii are VCs (more for the wife than for myself).

I do hope that Nintendo releases full version of each of the mini-games that are present in Wii Sports, or the console is going up for sale. $400 for 5 mini-games is not worth it.

Aussies get 360 HD DVD March 29 for $249 AUD

Feb 2nd 2007 7:47PM (Joystiq)
@ Vince,

I am extremely glad that MS did not add the HD DVD to the Xbox 360 and increased the price by $200.

I have two consoles. I also have the HD DVD add-on connected to my console in my entertainment room, but the console upstairs connected to a regular TV has no need to an HD DVD unit, for it will never be used to watch movies. I would have hated to pay and extra $200 when I did not have to.

I know another dozen Xbox 360 owners who all indicated they liked the HD DVD unit, but would not have wanted to pay another $200 either as $499 was the limit of what they where willing to pay.

The mounds of PS3 available everywhere in my city; from Blockbusters, Rogers, HMVs, Superstore, Walmarts and EBGames, is evidence that people do not want to pay more than $499 for a gaming console.

It matters not if you add Blu-Ray or HD DVD, it is still a gaming console.

EA to publish Mercenaries 2, still PS3-only

Feb 1st 2007 7:34PM (Joystiq)
I cannot remember the last EA game that was exclusive to one specific console. If we know anything about EA is that they like money, and will port a game to as many consoles as possible. But if you consider how people are talking about it not being announced yet for the Xbox 360, maybe not announcing it is the best way to generate free publicity.

Darwinia upgrades for Vista

I hope this is a sign that Darwinia will show up on Xbox Live Arcade sometime soon.

Square Enix blames Wii friend codes for lack of FFXI [update 1]

Feb 1st 2007 4:47PM (Joystiq)
I did not purchase the Wii to play online, so I care not about friend codes (honestly, this is the first I have heard of them). I have my Xbox 360 for all my online playing needs. I purchased the Wii for it's party friendly mini-games, and nothing more.

Today's hottest game video: Wii modchip

Jan 28th 2007 11:28AM (Joystiq)
Update on my new Wii. The system is nice. I can see why people would like it, but for solo play, Wii Sports cannot keep your interest long. In my opinion, the boxing controls are very slow and out of sync (maybe my setup is not optimised yet???), but I found that only about 1 out of every 3 punches swung registered. And as for golf, I can take 10 practice swings and be spot on, but when I take the first real swing, I go over and slice it....ah well...it is a party box...I expected a smuch. I may go and rent Wario Moves.....dang if it does not feel a bit hollow since I got no acheivements for my 501ft home run!!!

I have finaly gone and purchased a Wii. I am now the proud owner of a Wii60. I will play then post my opinion later. For now, I want to set this up, and see what all the hype is about. Let's see if the Wii can keep me entertained an wanting more as the Xbox 360 has done since launch day.

Bethesda "several years" into Fallout 3 development

Jan 26th 2007 1:22PM (Joystiq)
I have been waiting for Fallout 3 ever since the day I finished Fallout 2. I searched and salivated on every scrap of information I could find, but it always ended in disappointment. When Bethesda announced that they had purchased the rights to the Fallout name, I was overjoyed, but at the same time saddened knowing that Fallout would be put on the backburner once again as Bethesda was in the middle of Oblivion. Now reading this news has made my day. That and the fact that this game is headed to the Xbox 360 (not confirmed, but we know it is).

I do not share the negative views of some of the above comments. The fun in Fallout was never about the isometric view, or the turned-based fighting (which required a lot of planning), I always found the Fallout series to be so much fun because of the dark humour of the game. Also that Fallout 1&2 contained more hidden Easter eggs (including real Easter eggs) than any other game I cam remember. The games made reference to various movies, TV shows, and celebrities. It was impossible to explore without stumbling upon Monty Python, Star Trek, the Simpsons, or South Park references and jokes. In fact, if I was to list all the hidden jokes of this game, this would be a very long post indeed. As long as Bethesda keeps this type of humour, I will love it.
