X3F is a great blog guys. It's like the sister blog Joystiq, without all the Wii/PS3/PC comments that xbox360fanboys don't care about. Keep up the good work!

Oh, thanks for the plasma, elite and surround sound. It looks great!

PS3: component cables sold separately [update 1]

Oct 11th 2006 10:57PM (Joystiq)
Okay, this is getting old Sony. I want a PS3. I can afford a PS3. I have the HDTV ready to rock... But everyday I'm less and less sure that I'll get one in the next year, if ever.

First it's $600. Pricey, but doable. Then it's the mpeg-2 for some BD movies debacle. Then it's BYOHDMI. Then it's not compatible with my universal remote. Then it's "game levels are 4GB, but we'll offer demos" (that will take 4 days to download). Then it's all of my favorite Sony titles are not exclusive anymore. Then it's no rumble.... Where does it end?

I think I'll take my earmarked PS3 $1,000 and buy the HD-DVD player for 360, a Wii and some games, a ton of HD-DVD's and a 7.1 THX receiver.

As an aside, I work in supply chain operations (sourcing, manufacturing, distribution) for a Fortune 10 company. If we had a 2 million unit order due in 40 days we'd be freaking out. If Sony's not shitting in their pants, they should be.

How Microsoft might lead in market share

You know what a lot of the fanboys are missing is that Sony has completely missed their audience with the PS3. I actually have a very decent job making good money (study hard in college, it pays off big time) and I'm not interested in buying a PS3. I can afford it. That's not the rub. It's that none of the games on it look fun to me. I'd rather get a Wii and a bunch of games for that and my 360.

Props for Amped 3 [Update 9]

couldn't agree more. this game is fun, pure and simple. it's not supposed to reinvent the genre. it succeeds where it counts, which is entertainment. good review joystiq.

Bethesda squeezes Oblivion onto one disc

Excellent point about the CGI in PS3 games. Why not just use the in-game engine if it already looks photo realistic? However, the answer lies in the basic architecture of the Cell chip. Just look at the Sony demo; 100 HD movies playing at once. The Cell is awesome for dealing with media, not game code.

The 360, on the other hand, accesses memory and discs much faster. The PowerPC architecture uses "fatter" pipelines than intel or Cell chips. The PS3, via Sony's own admission, is an "entertainment supercomputer" that happens to play games. The 360 is a a badass game console that happens to do some media stuff.

If you're curious about the future of the PS3, look to the PSP. More movies on UMD than games by 10 to 1. Oh, and the movies cost $30!
