Rumor: Shogun 2: Total War to be shown at E3
May 31st 2010 9:00PM (Joystiq)This is by far the most exciting nostalgic video game news I have heard in a long time.
As for the worries about DLC and Annual sequels, I have some points to address.
There is a ton of DLC for Empire and Napoleon, yes, but you don't really need it to enjoy the game, even in single-player. They're just fluff units. I admit, I will likely buy some of the DLC for a new Shogun, depending upon what kind of units they are, but if you don't care for them, don't buy them.
The sequels have often added new features, such as the naval combat in Empire and the Multiplayer campaign in Napoleon. So there's some point to buying the sequels, but weigh those advantages before you buy. I bought Empire because I was a fan of the naval combat and I like industrial era warfare. However, Shogun is truly the campaign setup I prefer. I connect much more with the Sengoku Jidai vibe than with the Colonial one found in Empire and Napoleon. So I'll buy Shogun rather than Napoleon any day. Again, if you don't like it, don't buy it.

Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood announced and detailed by Ubisoft
May 11th 2010 2:55PM (Joystiq)Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood announced and detailed by Ubisoft
May 11th 2010 2:25PM (Joystiq)Something about the Assassin's Creed franchise really draws me in. I wasn't able to finish AC2, as my PS3 Blu-Ray drive broke, but it was good fun all the way up to that point. The clever inventions, the freerunning, and most of all, the AMAZING views when you get to the top of something tall.
I enjoy the occasional bit of freerunning and urban climbing. Games like Mirror's Edge and Assassin's Creed have at times completely changed my perspective on the world. After playing these games for a few hours, you see new ways to get places, and really get a sense of freedom found in very few other places.
And gadgets! Holy raptor Jesus, the Gadgets! The Poison Blade is one of the greatest inventions in modern gameplay. Sort of similar to the Poison Throwing Knives from Perfect Dark. Later on, with the hidden gun, things just get better.
The creativity shown in these games surpasses pretty much every other game I've played recently, so they have my money for sure.
Veni, vidi, vici, anyone?
Cowboy up with Red Dead Redemption's multiplayer modes
Apr 23rd 2010 2:57PM (Joystiq)The reworked Dead-Eye System is brilliant. It's an excellent way to bring something that powerful into a multiplayer arena. The only thing I can remember anywhere close to that would be "The Specialists" mod for Half-Life. One ability allowed you do to Bullet-time, but it slowed down time for everyone, while still allowing you full speed.
This has a spot on my shelf all ready.
