Rumor: Shogun 2: Total War to be shown at E3

May 31st 2010 9:00PM (Joystiq)
HEck yes! I'm VERY much looking forward to the ninja assassinations again. Shogun is one of my favorite games of all time, and I still go back to play it occasionally. Just the other day, I was mentioning to a friend that I wish they'd go back and make a remake.

This is by far the most exciting nostalgic video game news I have heard in a long time.

As for the worries about DLC and Annual sequels, I have some points to address.

There is a ton of DLC for Empire and Napoleon, yes, but you don't really need it to enjoy the game, even in single-player. They're just fluff units. I admit, I will likely buy some of the DLC for a new Shogun, depending upon what kind of units they are, but if you don't care for them, don't buy them.

The sequels have often added new features, such as the naval combat in Empire and the Multiplayer campaign in Napoleon. So there's some point to buying the sequels, but weigh those advantages before you buy. I bought Empire because I was a fan of the naval combat and I like industrial era warfare. However, Shogun is truly the campaign setup I prefer. I connect much more with the Sengoku Jidai vibe than with the Colonial one found in Empire and Napoleon. So I'll buy Shogun rather than Napoleon any day. Again, if you don't like it, don't buy it.

Catch up on Xenoblade with new trailer

May 28th 2010 3:00PM (Joystiq)
Hehe, thanks, I just started to get my girlfriend to play through it for the first time. I was unaware the devs were former Chrono Cross people. This game's place on my shelf has been secured. Thanks for the +1 and the heads up!

Catch up on Xenoblade with new trailer

Amazing! I love the world concept, and the art is amazing. No big deal if the textures aren't at the level of an HD system. My girlfriend and I will definitely be getting this. Looks to be an RPG which can finally give me some satisfaction. Not many of those have come out since Chrono Cross.

THQ introduces its own 'Online Pass' in UFC 2010

May 20th 2010 5:14PM (Joystiq)
Well, I have mixed feelings about this. On the one hand, I was intending to rent UFC 2010 and EA's MMA game to figure out which I enjoy more. Then I will buy the one I like better as a used copy at my favorite local Gamestop, because I only intend to play the game hot-seat with friends.

On the other hand, I hate the very concept of this sort of thing.

However, if we do the math, just make sure you buy it used for less than (retail price -$5), and you'll be fine

GameStop to offer in-store DLC purchases and new loyalty program this year

May 20th 2010 4:09PM (Joystiq)
I prefer buying games in stores, and Gamestop is my first choice most of the time. Granted, I'm very picky about WHICH location I go to. The one at Westgate West Shopping Center in San Jose is my favorite. The crew there are friendly and knowledgeable, and have often answered any compatibility questions I have. The main reason I purchase my games at a local store is this: I want to have physical media for my products. Call me a luddite, but I'm not willing to trust hundreds of dollar to a server system that may go offline sometime in the future. I like to have physical copies of all my stuff so that I can install it without needing the internet (for most games). So I don't like getting full games online.

It will be nice to be able to purchase some DLC along with the game, rather then getting it later.

Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood announced and detailed by Ubisoft

May 11th 2010 2:55PM (Joystiq)
Exactly! Much like the Zelda series, long hailed for its level-less system of simply gaining new items and more health, a new, unique ability is ALWAYS more fun (which is the most important thing here) than simply powering up your Magic Missile to the next level. And then they included the ability to purchase the different weapons to carry around, allowing someone to cater more to their style. I do wish the "ultimate" dagger didn't look quite as silly as it did though.

Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood announced and detailed by Ubisoft

Awesome!

Something about the Assassin's Creed franchise really draws me in. I wasn't able to finish AC2, as my PS3 Blu-Ray drive broke, but it was good fun all the way up to that point. The clever inventions, the freerunning, and most of all, the AMAZING views when you get to the top of something tall.

I enjoy the occasional bit of freerunning and urban climbing. Games like Mirror's Edge and Assassin's Creed have at times completely changed my perspective on the world. After playing these games for a few hours, you see new ways to get places, and really get a sense of freedom found in very few other places.

And gadgets! Holy raptor Jesus, the Gadgets! The Poison Blade is one of the greatest inventions in modern gameplay. Sort of similar to the Poison Throwing Knives from Perfect Dark. Later on, with the hidden gun, things just get better.

The creativity shown in these games surpasses pretty much every other game I've played recently, so they have my money for sure.

Veni, vidi, vici, anyone?

Cowboy up with Red Dead Redemption's multiplayer modes

Apr 23rd 2010 2:57PM (Joystiq)
Man, everything I see about this game just makes me more and more excited for it.

The reworked Dead-Eye System is brilliant. It's an excellent way to bring something that powerful into a multiplayer arena. The only thing I can remember anywhere close to that would be "The Specialists" mod for Half-Life. One ability allowed you do to Bullet-time, but it slowed down time for everyone, while still allowing you full speed.

This has a spot on my shelf all ready.

Keiji Inafune now Capcom 'global head of production'

Apr 23rd 2010 2:14PM (Joystiq)
I'm always pleased to see game designers and other creatives being put in charge of things, it tends to really show a commitment to a good game, not just a good profit.
