Anecdotal: Microsoft low on Xbox 360 coffins

Jun 6th 2007 6:50PM (Joystiq)
My Xbox 360 broke on me the first time since launch. Guess I'm pretty lucky.

I went through 4 PS2s though throughout its lifetime.

Does Microsoft need Japan to succeed?

Apr 20th 2007 2:40PM (Joystiq)
Well there is good software support in Japan...but those are dwindling quickly.

International developers, and American developers have been getting more innovating and more intruiging games. The japanese devs are starting to fall behind.

Look who's trying to innovate the game industry with better physics, better effects, and god forbid they actually render things with the in game engine rather than use LOL FMV sequences.

Many japanese developers will tell you that they're falling behind with the rest of the world. The US and european developers are using more sophisticated tools, and the XBOX has a more sophisticated channel to deliver them than any of their competitor.

LOL @ Wii and PS3 online...it's a joke.

And it's only a matter of time when the PC games market bridge their advanced tools and games to a console platform with will basically blow away Japanese developers.

The Japanese have fallen behind in game creation, and rehashing the same androgenous characters and the same old weak AI and physics will only appeal to those who love playing the same redundant things.

Innovation is spreading all over...and the Japanese is falling behind. It's only a matter of time when the standard of quality perception shifts to non japanese developers like Bioware.

Microsoft says "over half" of 360 buyers didn't own Xbox 1

Jan 18th 2007 4:33PM (Joystiq)
I have owned quite a few systems ...and owned all the systems of the previous generation.

After purchasing the original XBOX when it got it's first price drop, I have since not played any other system. The graphic superiority of the XBOX over the PS2 is just dominating.

...and that's just the tip of the iceberg. You'll be hard pressed to find an XBOX modder give up his XBMC.

Simply put, the original XBOX was only a failure to the ignorant. To those who tried to get the most out of it, it was a very rewarding and satisfying system...

...and that's not even getting into the XBOX LIVE service.

Lik-Sang, you will be missed. Sony flexes its muscles

Oct 25th 2006 7:30PM (Joystiq Playstation)
The unit itself is a constant price to Sony.

There are varying prices and such that shifts depending on the region you wish to physically sell the unit yes, thats true. Sony wants this, because they gain an edge in the price they charge in places like in Europe.

They fight for this because they have the ability to use the traditional distribution model to to their advantage, get to charge people more, and lock them to these prices.

That's changed -- at least in most cases for a lot of electronic products. In the global market, the cheapest price wins irregardless of where it's made. Why do people in California shop in either international sites, or other states? A good reason is they can avoid sales tax altogether which is a noticable difference in the price.

Sony is trying to lock this. They do not want their products to be distributed this way or else they lose the edge in the price skew in the conversion.

The bottom line is the consumer will want to pay the lowest possible price. Sony is using the law to bully little companies that try to provide the best prices.

The bottom line is the money - and they option to screw over Europe to charge more maybe to mitigate their losses. Sony wants both.

Irregardless - the consumer loses.

Lik-Sang, you will be missed. Sony flexes its muscles

Oct 25th 2006 6:17PM (Joystiq Playstation)
Bottom line is Sony wants to set a precedence to all would-be retailers of their product to not circumvent their skewed pricing across the regions.

Basically, they want to come out ahead in the exchange rate for their upcoming cash hole known as the PS3. They want to charge the European market the even more obscene prices, and they want the channel of their products closed to those who they see fit.

Hipocracy in 2 ways:

-Sony uses international facilities to shop for the cheapest labor across the globe for their entire product, yet charge regions of it different prices.

-They boast their products are region-free...so long as you purchase it in your allowed region.

The small company is burned for this because they wanted to flex their legal muscle and set an example to all global market retaillers. Justify it all you want, but you the consumer gets hurt in the end.

Analyzing the console subsidization strategy

As PAL waits, potential customers fire back

"Eat it or no Final Fantasy for you"

Best line ever. That pretty much sums up the Sony strategy.

A video walkthrough of the PS3's menu

So where is Playstation Life?

Xbox UI has an integrated community point and blade with highly integrated online features such as easy access to queued downloads, ability to compare scores with other users in your friends list. Basically NEXT-GEN online features.

The fact that the UI just shows basic system features and lacks the ease of use of community tools shows that we can't really expect much from Playstation Life.

I can control my files and my system settings fine -- I want an easy to use portal to my gaming community. Microsoft has been demoing the integration point with the online features and system features well before the launch of the XBOX 360.

Goes to show how much "planning" went into Playstation Life.

But hey, I'll wait till November...but it looks like those dreams of Playstation Life killing XBOX Live is just...that ...dreams.

If the UI is indicative of their state of development, then this 600$ machine doesn't come close to my 360.

The gui is slicker yes...but that's not why I bought a video game console for. I can look to Macintosh for that.
