Feb 9th 2006 3:49PM (Joystiq)As it is, it is still pretty damn cool, and I am currently in the market for some sort of controller so I can play more games on my laptop.
At $30, no analog is a big missing piece compared to other available controllers at the same price.
The demo (Xbox 360 delight #008)
Feb 7th 2006 4:29PM (Joystiq)We haven't seen the first offerings of ongoing content either such as new levels for games, characters, cars, episodes, etc. Unlike many people, I was quite happy with the launch titles, especially COD@ (except the multiplayer of course) and PGR3. And while I currently find it hard to tear myself away from DOA4 online, i simply LOVE XBLM gem, Geometry Wars. That game is SOOO freaking addictive. I suck at it with my pathetic 161,000 high score, but I love it.
Outpost Kaloki X is very fun too, same for the Marble game and Wik was surprisingly fun and addictive. Not to mentin Joust, one of my favorite games from my youth, circa 1982.
Microsoft...more of these please!
Call of Duty 2 patch does not address multiplayer issues
Feb 2nd 2006 6:23PM (Joystiq)And since I seriously doubt that will happen, I've already mentally kissed COD2 goodbye. Infinity Ward and Microsoft really screwed the pooch on this one. This game should have been a system seller, instead it's become a possible system killer. Great work guys!
Red lights, no explanation (Xbox 360 annoyance #012)
Jan 30th 2006 5:53PM (Joystiq)Sounds to me like some people need to learn to pay attention to the details when filling out forms and giving delivery information.
Fortunately, I've had NO problems with my 360, and since I don't do anything the manual doesn't recommend like moving the system while its running, stacking stuff on or next to it, or pulling the plug, (ALWAYS use a good Surge protector with ANY electronic device) I don't expect to.
2-4% is the normal defective rate for new electronics products, and its going to be no different for the PS3, as evidenced by all the defective ps2's that were sold. The difference is, Sony doesn't treat their customers as well as MS. With a PS3, if something goes wrong, you are stuck dealing with your retailer. With an Xbox or 360, Microsoft fixes the problem themselves...and for free. Nintendo traditionally has a lower defect rate for home consoles, but that is largely due to the fact that they are releasing OLDER technology that has already been through the "breaking-in" period.
I will likely buy a PS3, but I love my 360 NOW!

Joystiq predicts 2006: the predictioning
Jan 24th 2006 3:30PM (Joystiq)Goldman Sachs analyst Rick Sherlund has revealed in a recent report that Microsoft probably sold 1.3 million Xbox 360 units for the quarter, missing analysts’ estimates and Goldman Sachs’ own estimate of 1.8 million units. According to Sherlund, sales may have reached 900,000 units in North America, 300,000 in Europe and 100,000 in Asia.
They sold more than twice as many consoles as you said. What I find really laughable is you say, the only thing Xbox had over the PS2 was a hard drive, graphics and Online. That's quite a lot my friend. Developers have already said repeatedly that the 360 and PS3 are going to be virtually identical in terms of graphical prowess, and with the PS3 shipping with no hard drive, their possible entry into Online gaming is going to be a joke. No hard drive means no downloadable content, no demos, no Marketplace type setting like Xbox Live Marketplace.
The 360 continues to sell out wherever it is stocked and now that MS is putting a third factory into operation, hardware shortages are about to become a thing of the past for the 360. So, I'm going to have to say you're wrong again, and that MS will have quite a substantial lead by the time the PS3 launches in the US, likely in 2007.
Japanese gamers will never fully embrace Xbox360 until they come out with some niche Japanese flavored games, which I could personally not care less about. As long as the 360 does very well in Europe and the US as it clearly is and will, then Japanese developers will be on board.
Nintendo Revolution is intriguing. I expect it to do well at launch (depending on the number of launch titles available) but as always, new games will be released at a snails pace, and what buzz they initially garner will quickly vaporize into the ether.
PS3 launch games will look markedly inferior to 360 2nd generation games available at the same time, and it will sharply affect sales. Compounded by the fact that you can count on MS not releasing Halo3 until the launch of the PS3, SOny is going to be the company having to overcome major hurdles this time around.
In the end, 5 years from now, it is likely that Microsofts efforts and strategic moves result in a huge gain in market share.
Leaving Sony #1 at roughly 40%
Microsoft at around 40%
And Nintendo getting the final 20%
This generation will be the table-setter for the REAL battle which will begin in or around 2010 or 2011.
As for Blue-Ray vs HD-DVD, like most, I believe neither will be a standard in the next 3 years. But HD-DVD will have a much faster adoption rate due to its use in Windows based PC's that dominate that entire world. Which has a better chance, Blue Rays in 50 million PS3's or HD DVD in a BILLION PC's? The end result of such a lopsided race is too abvious as to require elaboration.
CES: Sony fails to get us highER
Jan 9th 2006 4:35PM (Joystiq)As a gamer first and foremost more than a console layalist, I am very disappointed that Sony is still refusing to produce an online gaming service in the mold of Xbox live. In my opinion this is a major mistake on their part. As good as Xbox Live has always been, Microsoft has really taken it to the next level with the 360.
It's funny to me that one of the most popular games on this "next-gen" system is an Asteroids type game, albeit with tremendous graphics, called Geometry Wars, which is only available through Xbox Live Marketplace.
I love my 360, and have had no problems with it, thankfully. It was well worth the 11 hours I spent in line to get it at launch.
