Wii U won't have DVD or Blu-ray playback, will include social media functionality

Jun 15th 2011 12:34PM (Joystiq)
@baby sea tuna Yeah so are lots of people, many dont even know it. But I think I have the right for paying the damn high prices at theatres, I love movies and I always seem them on the big screen, so im paying lots already, I use to have a dvd addiction too. Id pay for tv if my viewing it actually mattered to the continuation of the shows I watch, but I dont count as a viewer so why should I pay.

@PedoJokerBear I dont use netflix or pay for movies. Im just pointing out that theres alternatives on the system to watch movies..although nothing beats systems that are made to play movies.

@DokiDokiBawanga Im from Canada and netflix is here too but ive never used it cause I dont pay for that shit. Id still rather a cheaper console then a console at the price of PS3 when it first came out. To me it makes perfect sense not to have it when your selling a gaming console. Microsoft and Sony have deals and what not since they arnt just gaming, so for them dvd playback is dirt cheap.

@cantwait2bhome Would you rather pay prices compared to when the PS3 came out just so it can play Blu ray, a single patent cost to you may seem cheap but apply that to every console and even a couple buck per console is a lot. It will stack up and makes no sense to pay that when people ether have something else or dont ever use it, like i never use discs to watch any movies.

@Jason B Its not a rivalry or anything, its just cheaper then paying all the patent costs for blu ray on every console, if you make your own you pay alot less per console.

@(Unverified) Because its cheaper then paying patent costs..do you know anything about that. Do you remember how expensive a PS3 was when it first came out..
You have to pay patent costs on every console, if you make your own you dont gotta pay shit. simple eh

Who care really, I havnt inserted a disc to watch a movie in ages, and I dont plan on ever doing so. so I dont want nintendo jacking the price of the console to support a dead format and support an expensive format that will be dead soon enough. They got the netflix and all that shit so why pay patent costs for every freaking console, even at a buck a console thated be a million bucks for a million consoles to play dvd that maybe 10 people will actually use..so why oh why bother

"Any company making DVD products must license essential technology patents from the "3C' pool (LG, Philips, Pioneer, Sony: 3.5% per player/drive, minimum $3.50; additional $0.75 for Video CD compatibility; 3.75 cents per disc) and the "6C" pool (Hitachi, Matsushita (Panasonic), Mitsubishi, Samsung, Sanyo, Sharp, Toshiba, Victor (JVC), Warner: 4% per player/drive, minimum $3, maximum $8; 4% per "DVD Video decoder", minimum $1; 4.5 cents per ROM/Video/Audio disc; 4.5 cents for DVD-R disc; 6.5 cents for RW/RAM disc). Thomson —jokingly referred to as the "1C pool"— requests ~$1 per player/drive. Patent royalties of a few cents per disc are also owed to Discovision Associates, which once owned about 1300 optical disc patents, but many of them have expired. Per disc costs are paid by the replicator"
