Okay, first off, Guardian Heroes is RAD and I am very excited, but... Where is Radiant Silvergun? It was announced but there hasn't been any new news; there's been more info about Guardian Heroes even though it was announced much later.
Does it do the opposite? I want to run iMovie on my iPad 1; and you can't just install the iPhone version because it's a universal app that doesn't support iPad 1.
I think this is like the only app on the whole of the App Store that has this problem.
I'd be interested in two statistics from this experiment, here's hoping Valve publishes them:
How many forum users had a valid purchase on their Steam account? And Was there a net effect on sales?
Personally all I see DRM for is to prevent pirates from playing a game, it usually doesn't help with the sales. Usually, I laugh at people who spend a lot of time and money on DRM because it's not really a good investment strategy. DRM for the reason of laughing at pirates kindof gets the point way better. Still, I personally would never throw additional DRM on my own projects published through iOS or (in my dreams!) Steam.
I don't know about the actual patents or potential suits regarding using a magnet to power off/sleep a machine, but I do know that the Nintendo DS, DS Lite, and DSi all use a magnetic sensor to detect when the lid is down (The magnet in one of the speakers works double-duty to trigger the sensor).
I really don't think the Joystick argument means much. I LOVED Freespace and Freespace 2. I bought a force feedback Joystick for the games actually. But I only played that way like for 30 minutes. I much preferred playing those games with mouse and keyboard.
It's not a huge part of the experience for me; controls are controls. I think the space genre was killed by the industry, not by the user-base. Declining figures could be linked to a combination of a glut in the genre during the mid-to-late 90's, which lowered the efficacy of advertising; all space games looked "the same" and it was hard to tell what was shovelware and what was at a quality of Freespace and Wing Commander. As a result, advertising revenue was cut back across the board for space-sims and the genre effectively died.
Now is THE TIME to revive the genre if there ever was one; you'd be out in front of new eyes and you'd be unopposed.
Don't feel too bad HDR app devs. I recently put up an app that does 720p uploading of videos, and that one's going to go downhill after the update too. I am still going to push one major revision to make it continue to be useful, but I think my audience is going to shrink rapidly after the iOS update.
