Engadget's recession antidote: win a pair of Audioengine A5 speakers!

Mar 31st 2009 6:18PM (Engadget)
I could really use a pair of these! My desktop has no speakers, and it makes me sad. :(

Classics: The iPhone e-reader to rule them all?

Nov 10th 2008 2:57PM (Download Squad)
I really have enjoyed Classics. I don't mind the page-flipping animation, and really enjoy how responsive it is. And, I can't wait to see what books are added with the future updates. I love that there are such amazing works to read that are under no particular company's control. I'd love the ability to add titles, though, if the Classics team published a standard format for their reader.

Giveaway Monday: Spaced complete series on DVD

Aug 11th 2008 12:36PM (AOL TV)
Because, before it was released, it was one of the only things I'd ever illicitly downloaded from the Interwebs. And I watched it so many times that I WORE OUT MY LAPTOP. Seriously, I had to buy a new one.

Slashfood Ate (8): Gourmet coffee at home

Jul 24th 2008 9:53PM (Slashfood)
The moka pot doesn't make "real" espresso because the pressure doesn't get high enough to emulsify the coffee oils with the water to make the crema. It might appear a little frothy, but not a whole lot. Still is nice when you need a stronger than normal cup.

Also...I'd really like to throw in my recommendation of a Chemex brewer. Made of glass so it doesn't hold any rancid coffee flavors, and the special paper filters do their job so well that you really don't ever get a bitter brew. Really good if you don't necessary want to give up brewed coffee for espresso.

My foodie reading list

May 12th 2008 7:15PM (Slashfood)
I would highly recomment "The Fourth Star", by Leslie Brenner chronicling a year spent in the kitchen at Daniel Boulud's eponymous restaurant while they try to recapture the NYT's highest rating.

A little more of a reference book than anything, but "On Food and Cooking" by Harold McGee is one of my favorite books. They how's, what's, and why's of food and cooking techniques, with super-scientific detail. Just pick a random page and you'll find out some interesting tidbit you didn't know before.

DS Fanswag: The Ring of Fates awaits

Apr 3rd 2008 9:53AM (Joystiq Nintendo)
I would go with Final Fantasy III. Because sometimes you really just want an unforgiving RPG that doesn't hold your hand, or keep you from dying within 10 minutes of starting a new game.

It's Coq Au Vin Day!

Mar 22nd 2008 11:30AM (Slashfood)
If you want to get super-authentic, make sure the bottle of wine you use is a Beaujolais! It has a high-acidity really shines in real Coq au vin.

Philips and Lite-On push out external Blu-ray drive

Feb 28th 2008 9:09AM (Engadget)
Personally, I have been waiting for something like this for a while. I can't upgrade the drive in my laptop, and I don't want to pay $595+ for a combination blu ray player/burner. This will be much cheaper. Also, having scoured many places, I can't find a SINGLE external blu ray player. They are all burners.
