Nintendo chooses to announce Pokemon Gold and Silver remakes
May 8th 2009 10:31AM (Joystiq)Not counting the new Pokemon themselves, there's been the addition of Pokemon natures, a reworked stats system, new methods of evolution, Pokemon contests, 2 on 2 battles (seems trivial but really changes strategy), Pokemon abilities (huge!), Pokeball seals, Underground area, and the special/physical moves split (major gameplay change). But the Gold/Silver generation has probably the largest number of changes with the introduction of Pokemon genders, breeding, times of day and days of the week, the special stat attack/defense split, shiny Pokemon, and hold items (almost all MAJOR gameplay changes). Gold/Silver even allowed you to return to the region in the original games (though it was dumbed down a little... Still, no later Pokemon game has repeated this).
And what does the game not being 10 years old have to do with anything? Are you saying it's not possible to have a remake of a game until a full decade has passed? And actually, the Japanese version will be 10 years old later this year around the time the remake is due, and the North American version will be 10 years old next year. Ignoring that magic number, look at the systems the games have been on... Red/Blue were on the ORIGINAL Game Boy and moved to GBA. Gold/Silver were on Game Boy Color and are going to the DS. Are those not significant jumps?
I don't want to sound like a jerk, but please, don't make assumptions about things you know nothing about. If you are not excited about this bit of news, fine. That's your right. But just know that for Pokemon fans, this IS big news. I'm not saying Nintendo isn't milking the series, but that doesn't make this announcement any less significant. For some fans, these are considered the best games in the series, and this announcement has been a long time coming.
