Splatterhouse review: All guts, no glory

Nov 29th 2010 8:17PM (Joystiq)
@HybridPara
I WAS talking about gaming responsibly, and how it's becoming increasingly difficult to do so. Titles like this one are about the only thing I can find at my local Stuffmart. Every title I pick up I have to think, "Can I actually play this when my kids are up?" More often than not, the answer has been no. And it is not just this particular genre. It's pretty much across the board. Sure, some may find it fun or even funny to "paint the walls red." but "some" does not mean all.

Splatterhouse review: All guts, no glory

I think I just found the difference between the Joystiq staff and it's readers: Maturity level. If all it takes to make a game "great" to you is adding excessive levels of blood and guts then you really need to grow a pair. Here's a thought, why not make a game with an actual plot, decent controls that don't require the dexterity of a seasoned contortionist, and how about something I can play in front of my 5 year old that won't make her forget how to sleep... This is just the latest example of what has gone so terribly wrong with the gaming industry. Just because they CAN make a game this ultra-gory and pointless, doesn't mean they SHOULD.

Sony 'applying 3D' to over 20 internal games, more than 50 on the platform

I wish 3D TV would just go away.... Period. Never mind that the TVs and Glasses required would take a bank robbery to afford. What about the 20+% of people who can't watch 3D TV without getting brain splitting migraines in the first 15 minutes? Major eye strain is and always will be the result of 3D media unless they can create some form of ACTUAL 3D device (aka holographic projection). I realize that they are just trying to keep selling us junk we don't need like uber high definition TVs (they do realize that the human eye can only see in a limited number of dpi/f right?) but at some point they have to realize they are alienating a large portion of the market.

Gran Turismo 5's weather effects and X1 Prototype in video

question: Is this game EVER going to be released? They've been teasing us with it for what.. 5 years now? I've been a serious GT fan since the first one. I have every GT game they have ever released. But at this point I no longer care if 5 ever gets made. Hype and teasers are great and all but enough is enough. All I can tell so far is that the people behind the game are great at making CG movies, but where's the GAME? I guess I'll just give my money to the "Ridge Racer" and "Burnout" franchises and IF the game ever comes out, I might think about, maybe, possibly,... buying beer instead.

White Knight Chronicles 2 characters introduced in new Japanese story trailer

So far it looks good. But pretty movies don't make the game. (It didn't work for FF13, won't work here either.) I hope they fixed the problems they had with WKC . Don't get me wrong WKC is a fun game. But there are some things they could improve.

For example, they could have let the player created character (PCC) have at least SOME dialogue even if it was simply logistical (i.e. where are we going? what are we doing?). And I really wished I could make my PCC non-human. There are lots of other "races" I would have loved to be. (Frog Mage... cool.)

Plus there are some issues with the battle system that could be better. Like giving some kind of indication of when a enemy comes into range, or the ability to dodge enemy attacks by getting out of their range/direction of attack. Also WKC suffered from the same issue that plagues many RPGs: Monumental jumps in difficulty. (Random battles are so weak they only require one attack, but, turn the corner and the boss kills YOU with only one attack.)

All this aside, I will be axiously awaiting WKC2. I hope it doesn't take 4 years to get to the US like WKC did.

Air Force disappointed by PS3's Other OS removal

May 12th 2010 6:53PM (Joystiq)
O.k. Why does every one seem to think that "hackers" are all angry 16 year old geniuses who get off causing havoc from their mothers' basements??

New flash: A large percentage of honest to (insert deity of your choice here) hackers are college educated, government trained, and work for the military. Why? Because, Hacking is work. Hard work. And hackers, like every one else, like to get paid for their work. Therefore, this whole "install other OS" issue, is really a non-issue. If it can be made, it can be un-made. I've seen people put Linux on their iPods. Last I checked, iPods don't have an "install other OS" feature either. At the end of the day, the old adage, "Where there's a will, there's a way." seems to fit.

(please note, that "large percentage" does in no way mean all or even most. For "Most" look to corporate America.)
