Japanese hardware sales, 13 November - 19 November: thankful edition

Nov 25th 2006 1:26AM (Joystiq)
Here's what I want to know - where the hell are all these DS Lites going to? They sell around 100k-200k/week, sooner or later there are going to be more DS Lites than Japanese citizens...

TV remotes demystify Wii sensor bar

Nov 21st 2006 4:09PM (Joystiq)
I think you guys are being a little harsh - yeah, this might have been known, but now that these guys have put it out there, people may come up with better applications - wider sensor bars (which might come in handy for big-ass TVs or people with projectors, wireless ones, etc. Maybe someone who has the technical know-how but didn't consider the implications will stumble across the video and decide he wants to do something.

New Wii owners: your impressions?

Oh, and another minor note - my sister is a non-gamer (the most hardcore she's ever been is The Sims 2), but after playing Wii Sports she wants one of her own. My parents were quite impressed too, so they just might get it for her.

New Wii owners: your impressions?

Wii Sports is incredibly enjoyable and proves that sports games (particularly Tennis and Boxing) have potential on the system.

Rayman is a hoot - I wish they'd make an entire game out of the plunger-shooting games. I *am* annoyed that you can't switch the setting as to which hand you hold the remote in and which hand you hold the nunchuck in, because during the beat-matching levels I have to switch components.

Red Steel's controls are going to take a while to get used to. Looks like an arcade game, which I can dig. Getting the machine gun is satisfying.

I'm personally fine with the sound on the wiimote for now, although I would like for them to eventually come out with a wiimote that has better sound quality.

Haven't tried Zelda or CoD3 yet - my arms are quite tired so I'm waiting until tomorrow.

Overall, the sensor bar has been pretty good - have tried it below and on top of the TV with few problems. Remote responds well and seems pretty accurate to me.

I made a Mii, but I probably won't use the feature (or the message board stuff) that often. I look forward to new channels. Text is very readable on the screen.

Kudos to Nintendo for making what looks to be an amazing console, and to 3rd-party developers as they seem to have gotten the hang of things early. This won't be like the DS where it took 3-4 months for developers to figure out what they were doing, I expect some amazing games to come out in the next month or two.

Where have all the nunchuks gone? [update 1]

Nov 19th 2006 4:36PM (Joystiq)
I picked up my pre-ordered Wii at GameStop and was shocked to discover that they didn't get any of their peripheral shipments - no classic controllers, no wiimotes, no nunchucks. Went next door to Target (where there was quite the long line - they'd handed out tickets the previous night), walked over to their periph display stand, found several remotes and a couple classic controllers, no nunchucks. Got one of each, got in line. Started chatting with the kid who got in line behind me, who was lucky enough to get a wiimote and a nunchuck (the last one, in fact). He asked me to hold them for him while he ran downstairs to get cash, I did so, he came back, we waited in line some more. His friend joined me in line, and out of the corner of my eye I spotted that there was one more nunchuck in the display stand. One of them was nice enough to run over and grab it for me (I walk w/ a cane), so I ended up getting my second controller set.

One thing I will say, though - bundling the two together would make for a $60 controller, and that's just not cool. At least you'll hopefully be able to get cheaper third-party nunchucks soon. Personally, I plan to hold off on getting two more controller sets until I'm in Japan and the exchange rate favors me.

PS3: HDMI doesn't like you

@8 - "Minor problems"? One of the main selling points of the console malfunctioning is a 'minor problem'?

Violence escalates during PS3 launch [update 9]

@ socrates - I think you misunderstand my post; I'm hardly bitter at all (didn't try to pre-order a PS3, considered waiting in line for about 5 minutes before I looked outside on Thursday night and realized the weather would make it hell, have a Wii pre-ordered, etc).

However, I've just been following coverage on Joystiq, Kotaku, Destructoid, Fark, and CNN. I'm more or less appalled, as a gamer and as a human being, by how this has been handled across the board. I think that the retailers and Sony need to be held responsible in one way or another for this fiasco that is mostly of their own creation.

Of course, it's not totally their fault - the hype that the gamers themselves have created, the willingness of people with money to burn to pay greatly inflated prices for consoles on eBay, and the greed of people who are willing to go at great lengths to get one to sell are to blame as well, and I freely admit that.

Still, the poor planning by retailers and the repeated 'musical chairs' incidents are inexcusable. I walk with a cane, and had I not been able to get in line simply because I can't walk that quickly, you better imagine I'd be raising quite a bit of hell.

Legally, how plausible is a class-action suit against SCEA and/or the retailers by those who have been injured/shot/robbed/etc in the process of waiting in line for a PS3?

PC Gamer lures PS3 buyer with $7500 gaming rig

Yeah, Rizzo made the point I was about to make. 'Buying' is one thing, but 'owning' is another.

Gamestop selling some Wii games early

I picked up my copies of Red Steel, Zelda, and Rayman at the GameStop last night (along with my preorder of FFIII and Elite Beat Agents).
