Firmware 1.80 up for downloads, our opinions also available

May 24th 2007 3:16PM (Joystiq Playstation)
@ Stef Geiger
I tested with GOW and my TV does have a info button so I can check resolution. On GOW the resolution does go down to 480p if I select progressive in the game you have to leave the game on interlaced if you want the HD upscaling at least on that game. I's not sure if this affects the overall possible quality or not I would think it could but I still think it is better.

Also a little anonying but not a feature breaker if you leave the PS3 setting to Normal not Full it will not go to widescreen automatically on GOW. You have to set the screen to Full 1st it seems if I keep the Normal aspect ratio and set the game to wide Kratos gets super skinny.

All in all I like this patch definatly makes games look a bit better.

Bungie, I am SO mad at you

May 16th 2007 6:10PM (Joystiq)
I understand there is frustration for those that bought Crackdown just for the beta. Though a little silly a reason for the purchase of a game, and I know this sold tons for that reason. I agree with the one of the above post for a code in the box it would have been so much easier to pull off than this game menu thing and easier to clean up too I would imagine.

But people should never expect anything with the name Beta infront of it to go smoothly its one thing to take time off for a retail game and anothing thing for something that may break. I have taken off my fair share on a game or two in the past mostly MMO's but it was less about the game than just wanting some time off but to count on a beta to be there and be up at the set time is not reliable enough to count on.

Really though MS is in a position now that they have to make the Crackdown disk work, sure they could open the beta up but that would be a major piss off for those that bought Crackdown for the Beta. But I agree with the people they need to get this done soon to be fair to the fans that paid for the access MS used a big card to draw people to Crackdown and it is a great game on its own but would be a shame to make the people that bought it feel cheated hurting future promotions.

Ubisoft says Conviction can't be done on PS3

May 8th 2007 4:35PM (Joystiq Xbox)
I think in general graphics on both systems will be comparible though I do feel the 360 GPU does have the edge. Because I feel the 360 is the most flexible and easiest to develop for system and can more easily squeeze more power out.

But I dont think we should be so quick to blame the slow down and flaws of many multiplatform games on the PS3's hardware either. Many of these games have came to Wii too so we know they could step back a notch if they really needed to in order for the games play perfect. I think the simple truth is developers are being lazy on the ports or they simply just havn't got it down yet. And that may be the case. I dont think 3rd parties had alot of information before the system launch, look at the games that pulled online that was rumored to be because they didn't know how Sony was going to handle online.

Now the area I could see Sony pulling ahead is in Physics and I see that as an area they need to consentrate on to release games that take advantage of that power.

Catan now available on XBLA ... with no demo

May 2nd 2007 7:51PM (Joystiq)
I got the demo at 3AM and played a little must have been pulled for some reason. Hmm may be best to delete this and just download the full cause I want it incase it was pulled for console hijinks.

Jaffe reviews the reviews of Calling All Cars

May 1st 2007 8:32PM (Joystiq)
Really he shouldn't be suprised by the score Gamespot seems to be a little harsher on there reviews in general. Their review said they really like alot of the online stuff and I can't ignore that I am also concerned about the limited maps/weapons as well as single player mode. In the end though I will take all the reviews into account that way I know I am getting varied opinion of the game I actually prefer demos and let the the games speak for themselves.

Guitar Hero controller modded for correct-handers (lefties)

May 1st 2007 3:24PM (Joystiq)
I know that the 360 version has a left hand flip option I would imagine the PS2 version also has this. I tried this out even though Im right handed and I will say it works but could see where the wammy bar would get in the way it looks like that and the strap was the only reason they did this mod as they didnt change the button layout on the pictures so I assume they will set the lefty switch option.

Insomniac sets up a ban policy for Resistance

Apr 27th 2007 7:10PM (Joystiq Playstation)
@Mr Khan

It is hard to define what is a glitch or cheating some times. I have heard some people call it glitching to find a way to climb on a wall but that seems silly to me as you can still be seen and shot. When I think of abusing a glitch I think of someone clipping a wall or something to go somewhere they cant get hurt or get an advantage over others. And some glitches are just to be silly my cousin showed me a glitch in Call of Duty 2 where if crouched just right by a grenade and not die your animation would mess up and look pretty funny.

I grew up in a day of PC FPS's where you could Rocket/BFG/Grenade Jump and get to some interesting locals that some might consider as cheating reguardless of the skill required to master those technics.

But at the end of the day there really is no way for developers to think of every possible combination and all it takes is someone finding a hole in the map and they start causing trouble. So the responsible good sportman thing to do if you find a bug is to tell the developers how to recreate it so they can patch it.

Insomniac sets up a ban policy for Resistance

@massive_98

There are glitches in many online games. But they generally eventually get patched when they are able to aka a recreatable glitch not just once in a blue moon sort of thing.

Gears of War COG tag videos are the new horse armor

Apr 26th 2007 5:28PM (Joystiq)
I dont see this as a big deal they produced video stratagy guides and they are seeing if they will sell this is buisness. These kind of things have been sold before there have been books, videos, and phone numbers peddling this service for a long time. Now they dont seem terribly priced but they are not getting money from me as I would rather get mine the old fashion way or use gamefaqs.

Price gouging is one thing but this is just them selling stuff that isn't targeting me so I can't see why I should get mad. I will admit if I needed one more COG I might be tempted by this especially if I cant find it with other sources. There are actually people out there that bought their broadband connection for their xbox and I imagine some people dont know about gamefaqs or even this website(even if they do have a pc).

Halo 3 brings the true 1080p pain?

Apr 24th 2007 5:07PM (Joystiq Xbox)
#13 I giggle everytime I see that argument that you need Blu Ray for 1080p. Like #17 said 1080p is a resolution and that can be done just fine as it is, are you saying Tekken Dark Resurection, Flow, or Gran Turismo HD on the Playstation Network are not capible of 1080p cause they aren't on Blu Ray. Infact they are fairly small downloads.

Just how much data do you think a console can stream in a level. On 360 there is a maximum ammount of 512 for graphical data and game code(same as PS3 though Xbox360's is a little more flexible but Im sure the PS3 has its strengths too) and if you take system bus memory speeds etc in consideration I dont see this being an issue on a game such as Halo 3.

Really the only game that I could see this even being remotely an issue would be a sandbox game that is just extremely large and im talking budget breaking large. Sure not having multiple disk is great but this doesnt make it un-doable.
