Sony's PS3 interface revealed

May 13th 2006 12:38PM (Engadget)
Geez, what is up with all of these menus and personal settings and such. I don't want my gaming system to be a computer. I just want to turn it on have have it start the game. Not have to go through 5 minutes of personal settings and then another five to load the game.

On...Then Play....That is all I want.

PlayStation 3 in its final form [update 1]

May 9th 2006 12:08AM (Joystiq)
Wow, does anyone notice how freaking huge that case is? I', assuming the Ps2 controller is the same size as the current one. From the way they designed it it looks like they want you to set it up width wise like in the picture. It is like a freaking Sony banner for your living room.

Add that to the price and the cheap attempts at taking Nintendo's Controller and Microsoft's online system, I am just not going to get a PS3 this time around.

MacBook rumor twofer

May 5th 2006 9:12PM (Engadget)
May 9th huh? Same day E3 opens up. People were wondering why the heck Apple had a booth at E3. Maybe we now know.

I don't expect them to be stealing any of Nintendo's steam though.

TUAW Poll: The new Mac ads

May 2nd 2006 5:01PM (TUAW.com)
They are nice and funny, but they actually don't do anything to showcase the mac itself. All you get to see of it is about 3 secs of a front view at the end of the commercial.

All the points it is trying to get across are slightly vague I think too. Take the virus one for example. They say the mac doesn't get Windows viruses but they don't actually point out that the mac is more secure, or that you don't need to deal with anti-virus software or that spyware isn't a problem either.

Nintendo invokes good names to defend a bad one [update 1]

Apr 29th 2006 4:14PM (Joystiq)
Personally I think the logo designs I have seen from EA and from other sources with the slanted "W" blending into the "i"'s looks pretty sweet. I also like the concept behind the name, but saying the name is just brutal.

I mean it is really going to be hard to walk into a store either as a parent or gamer or whatever and have to say "Could you point me to the Nintendo Wee?"

It just sounds awkward. The word itself does not sound fmaily friendly, as Nintendo would want it to be. While the explanation behind the system is great, who is going to explain that naming scheme to a parent? A Wal-Mart employee? Even if they do explain it do you think 90% of the population cares how or why Nintendo named the system?

While many say that a name does not sell a system, it does sell a system. Espeically for people who have no idea what it is. The name is not descriptive. If a 66 year old man walks into Best Buy and sees "Wii" is that going to make him want to buy it over a PS3? I don't think that Wii has any more inviting marketing terminology or approach over the other names.

17 inch MacBook Pro: a video pro's dream

@#9
Actually I think the majority of "pro" users are business people, and from what I have been reading at other boards like appleinsider, cnet and so forth, these business people want something small to travel with, not a "behemoth" 17" notebook.

Boot Camp lets Macs run Windows ... officially

Apr 5th 2006 10:04AM (Engadget)
I can see how this is really cool and all, but what is the point?

People buy macs not for the hardware, but for the OS. If I buy a MBP and throw windows on it, there is no difference now then if I went out and bought a dual-core Toshiba or Sony. Wouldn't it be more effcient for Apple simply to create a Virtualization environment for software rather then create a whole new dual booting system?

For me I just can't seem to understand why people would buy a mac simply to put XP on it. Why waste your time, when you could just buy a perfectly capable PC laptop?

Is the eMac's successor on the horizon?

Mar 28th 2006 4:00PM (TUAW.com)
I cant imagine that they would re-release the eMac, even at an educational standpoint.

With the goals that the educations is trying to advocate these days the ibook mobile learning labs seem to be a more effcient and cost conscience decision.

Even, LCD's are so cheap these days they could offer something like a mac mini+screen or a cord solo version of the imac for a fairly cheap price.

Create your own OS Xesque background

Mar 22nd 2006 2:45PM (TUAW.com)
If you want a quick lazy way to get some great abstract backgrounds search the net for fractal flames. That is essentially all those backgrounds are.

If you are on Windows you can download
Apophysis
http://www.apophysis.org/

Alternatively for both platforms the freeware image editor Gimp has a fractal flame creation tool.
A quick net search for tutorials on that should get you off and running.

DS web browser and TV tuner announced

Feb 15th 2006 9:40AM (Joystiq)
Ok I am an Opera user.

I think this whole thing is sort of ironic since the Nintendo.com website cannot be viewed in the Opera browser. The site tells you to update your website to the newest versions of Firefox, Netscape or IE.
