How to block ads on the Xbox 360 Dashboard
Dec 9th 2011 1:29PM (Joystiq)By blocking ads, you're taking away a portion of their revenue stream and in a sense saying:
"hey I think you guys should continue doing all this hard work to give us video game news AND pay for all those server/hosting expenses out of your pocket just so we can use your site for FREE and not have to view ads"

Jun 24th 2010 7:15AM (Joystiq)Um, I did read the article... what you state:
"IGN was told by Microsoft that you can play some Kinect games sitting down, but then we've heard the opposite from some developers"
... IS THE WHOLE REASON the "new" quote I used came about... It's a response to the original article written IGN which was based on what they'd heard from devs:
"In response to [THAT] article, Microsoft representatives reached out to IGN to clarify , saying we definitely will be able to sit while using Kinect. Representatives said they want to provide a comfortable, enjoyable experience for users and understand that people don't want to watch a movie standing up"

'Microsoft representatives reached out to IGN to clarify, saying we definitely will be able to sit while using Kinect. Representatives said they want to provide a comfortable, enjoyable experience for users and understand that people don't want to watch a movie standing up.'
"The whole point of the glowing ball on a move controller is to track depth."
Yup, the whole point of the glowing ball IS to track depth. Doesn't that kind of make you wonder that even Sony's knows that successful depth tracking with JUST the Eyetoy only isn't a viable solution? And then you're still stuck with how are you're going to track your LOWER half in 3D space without attaching glowing balls to your body. (lol, kinda like how they do motion tracking in the movies)
"All your points can be solved by software, color me not impressed"
Once again, that goes back to what I originally said:
"It'll be interesting to see if Harmonix takes the full time needed to tackle the additional work to make Dance Central work on the same level as what they have going on for Kinect. Hopefully, they'll be up to the task!"
Don't you think it'll be more work for them to try and "fake" the 3D depth tracking than to have the necessary hardware available to easily track it. And the question still remains whether or not they'll be able to successful fake it on a level where user's won't be saying that the Kinect version of Dance Central is the best version.
"Back to my question, what game have been shown (or any concept for that matter) on Kinect that cant be done with Sony's system?"
Take for example the demo of the Your shape "game" for Kinect... when you lift your leg forward... it shows a digital representation of you lifting forward... not only that but it can actually measure if the ANGLE your bending your knee is at the right degree.
As far as I know, that can't be done without attaching some kind of peripheral to your legs in conjuction with the PS EyeToy.

Jun 24th 2010 1:19AM (Joystiq)"On board hardware?"
The RGB camera and the additional Infrared camera.
"Please explain why any of this is going to help when it comes down to joystiq original complaint which will still work the same when a similar game for Kinect. "
Suppose if a dance move requires you to put your foot forward. That requires DEPTH tracking. That's why I pointed out the fact that the kung fu game with the Eyetoy only tracks left/right kick and punch movements (2D). As far as I can tell, there's no kicking in front of you, etc. Suppose a dance move requires you to jump back or forward. What then?
"Our tech is fairly similar although we don’t use a 3D camera."
That's the whole point I'm trying to make... along with the infrared camera, Kinect has those 2 features... you don't have the "oh, you'll need to clear certain items out the way because we can see your body" ... or the "oh you can kick to the side but there's no kicking behind you or in front of you"
Dance Central could bust a move on PS3, but Wii put in a corner
Jun 23rd 2010 11:17PM (Joystiq)There's a pretty sizable difference between what Kinect and the PSEye can do, simple because Kinect IS more than just a camera.
Looking at the story you linked to:
http://www.joystiq.com/2010/05/17/hands-on-playstation-eyes-kung-fu-live/
"However, this doesn't negate the fact that I'm staring at the TV and punching and kicking the air. Because of the 2D orientation of the game, you'll be facing forward, but moving side to side, which is simply not as intuitive as facing the screen and moving in the same direction."
There's a reason for that... the PSEye doesn't have any "on-board" hardware to make full body 3D depth tracking "easy". Kinect has more than one camera (and one picks up infrared) that allows it to track full body movements and up to 40 "joints" in 3D space.
I think the key here is that Kinect turns what it sees into something that can be more easily processed by the console. There's no need for individual devs to try and write code to make the camera "see" (as it were) your whole body and then understand that this is your arm bending... this is your leg kicking forward and not sideways. The Kinect hardware paired with MS's software does that for developers.
Also another point is that since there's a infrared camera on-board... things like lighting conditions and in-animate (sp?) objects (furniture) can move easily be eliminated from the background...
http://kotaku.com/5402930/eyepet-review-his-masters-voice
"You know something's wrong when the tutorial tells you to empty your living room of furniture, and definitely know something is wrong when half of the basic tutorials end in acute muscular pain as the EyePet randomly fails to respond to the most simple of commands. In short, in the real world (and I tested it in all kinds of lighting conditions), the EyePet ranges from mostly obedient to unresponsive to downright oblivious of your presence."
You can watch engadget's live show from today (FYI, it'll probably be back up on their site a little later) and you'll see the tech demo of the tracking and elimination that Kinect does.
On-topic... it'll be interesting to see if Harmonix takes the full time needed to tackle the additional work to make Dance Central work on the same level as what they have going on for Kinect. Hopefully, they'll be up to the task!
New Xbox 360 shuts down before overheating
Jun 22nd 2010 11:37AM (Joystiq)I know the area around my PS3 gets pretty hot if I leave it on for a while (and it's a little bit more space available than in the entertainment center pictured in the article). I've had mine shutdown before.

Halo: Reach 'bending the Xbox as far as it'll bend,' Bungie assures
Jan 22nd 2010 5:27PM (Joystiq)There's a balance between resources to use for graphics and gameplay and I, personally, like the balance that Bungie goes for... they allow enough system "resources" for good graphics but then also put emphasis on great gameplay elements that make the game much more fun and replayable.
