Review: Red Dead Redemption (single-player)

May 21st 2010 3:24PM (Joystiq)
I did fail. Miserably.

So let me get this straight, you're saying I should wait for the "Multiplayer" version of this website's review before posting my views on it? ...Really...?

As I said, perhaps you should actually bother reading my post. Nowhere did I refer to this website's review. What sense would it make to specifically include THIS review in that group? Grasping at straws, are we?

I understand that this is the internet, and that you're eager to get your "HAH HAH YOU DIDN'T READ THE TITLE" fix for the day. But at the very least, try to see to it that it actually makes sense first.

Obviously you didn't actually read my post. Not too bright, are you?

Review: Red Dead Redemption (single-player)

I'm amazed that no review I've read mentions how much of a technical disaster the Free Roam multiplayer is. Myself and everyone I've played with can't go 10 minutes without our characters becoming invisible (causing you to be unable to aim at or shoot anything), trying to plant a bomb and having the game just freeze during the NIS, or just suddenly being completely and permanently unable to move. The only solution for most of these problems is leaving Multiplayer mode (which inexplicably forces you to load the first single-player cutscene, THEN load the first actual single-player level instead of taking you back to the main menu). Most times, you FINALLY load back into the Multiplayer mode only to realize the problem is still happening.

I can understand that the online aspect of this game wasn't the main focus, but many questionable design choices and borderline unshippable bugs make me wonder what they were thinking. It's not like they didn't KNOW this stuff was in there, I found all 3 problems above within a half hour of being online. And because each "session" usually only has a few players in it at a time, I doubt they were caused by unforeseeable server load.

I can agree with most of what the reviews are saying about the single player story. And again, I realize that the whole Free Roam mode was pretty much an afterthought compared to the main focus of the game, and that there will probably be a patch to fix some of this stuff. But there are times when this mode borders on unplayable, which is disappointing for someone who was really looking forward to it.
