This is being released to give us something to hold us over for the weekend. For a while the suspected release date was going to be the 8th but since bugs arose they decided to delay the update until (their new best guess) of Monday. Luckily they're being super cool and letting us check it out.
As said above, the new terrain generation feels much more natural as well as the lighting. I managed to run in to one NPC village (-NPC's) and it was neat. I already see myself making a giant warmongering country that will seek to conquer NPC villages.
It should be considerably better than XI's breading system since you'll be able to straight up trade or sell the chocobo you've bread. This will be great for players that have the time to dedicate to such things as breading because they'll be able able to make some good gil out of it. And it'll be great for the player who isn't able to plop down for hours to play because they'll just be able to buy their chocobo.
They had it in FFXI and it was terrible. Players cared about it for maybe a month before realizing how bad it was. They've already said that Chocobo breeding will be in the far future. I'd be up for chocobo racing again if we were given control of the mounts during the race... but since everyone would think they're in first place because of server lag I don't think it would be possible.
The armoury system allows you to assign most abilities from other classes you've ranked up to your current class. So on Archer I could equip Protect and Cure from Conjurer, Attack boosting abilities from Lancer, Debuffs from Thaumaturge... all on Archer. Making you a much more rounded and valuable player in a party. It's actually pretty neat. And yeah, XI and XIV's idea to let you level all the classes on one character is just great and one of the things that I really enjoy about these games.
Let's not forget the addition of auto-attack, the removal of the stamina bar, and dungeons! (Also, I'm 83% sure they're removing the physical level with this patch which would allot attribute points to each class instead of all classes having to share points!)
No sir. This update is mostly just to get the new features and mechanics out there. They still have to fine tune, add more, blah blah. It's a great first step but not ready for new players. Especially new non-Final Fantasy players. According to the outline for what's to be added, the end of summer would probably be a good time to check the game out. A lot of new features will be added by then, the battle system should be well balanced and hopefully the UI will see it's overhaul by then.
