3DS touchscreen tech chosen for DS compatibility

Jun 12th 2011 5:37AM (Joystiq)
@sonicspike41 - they do actually use black magic! Or at least adaptive active areas.

First, the touch sensitive location for a given virtual button is not where the button is (as it would be on a DS with stylus) but where your finger actually touches when you *think* you're pushing the button. Try working an iPhone upside-down and you'll see how far off that location actually is.
Second, the size of the active area isn't the same as the graphics - it's larger, where possible.
Third the active area may also be adaptive, for example on the keyboard it watches what you're writing and makes the touch areas of the next likely letters larger so you're more likely to hit them right.

The first adaptation works really badly with styluses made to work with capacitative touchscreens, as you can imagine.

Still, I wish Nintendo had gone for some method that allows multitouch. More on the Wii U than on the 3DS, since backwards compatibility with DS games isn't likely to be such a big thing on the U.

Red Dead Redemption holds Mario from top spot on UK charts

"Week ending June 12" - that's only *two days* (or maybe three, depending how they count) of Mario sales, since it was released on June 10th. And it's still in 2nd slot.

Steam for Mac adds Half-Life 2 with cross-platform Steam Cloud support

It's excellent that Valve are doing this - I've been waiting for something to kickstart gaming on the Mac for years.

So it seems churlish, but I do hope they start making efforts towards more graphics speed... HL2/OSX runs lots slower at the same res on an iMac with ATI4850 than HL2/Windows does on a Mini with nVidia 9400.

Portal runs considerably better than HL2 on OSX, while on Windows it's the other way around - this gives me hope!
