Steam weekend special: Lost Planet for $5

Feb 28th 2009 3:37AM (Joystiq)
This is why you NEVER buy games on Steam over the weekday. Wait it out until Thursday or Friday for the deals and see if anything catches your fancy.

TF2 Scout update live, game on sale this week on Steam

Feb 26th 2009 12:33AM (Joystiq)
Should see the massive complaining from the spy community, it is just pure hysterics.

They get a back stab that not only works properly, but at a faster recharge and speed too.

But at the cost of face and side stabs, which apparently is 'critical' to the spy to learn and use.

So they would rather have a BROKEN class just so that they didn't have to relearn how to play the spy properly.

Wii's Virtual Console sales declining

Apr 28th 2007 11:49PM (Joystiq)
I'm retty certain that a multibillion dollar company has done market research and price analysis on the VC, and the current prices are a result from it. To hear people on the internet bitch 'OH IT IS TOO EXPENSIVE!' know nothing about market trends, profit curves, preceived worth, etc.

As for storage Nintendo has given Wii owners two choices. Back up to SD cards, which from the sound of things here is so hard to do it isn't worth doing. When it did people get so lazy to switch games in and out?

Also that if I recall correctly you can just delete them and if you have an account you can redownload them for free later.

I for one highly enjoy the VC and the games in it that otherwise I would of never of played before. Congrats Nintendo.

Report: Kojima feels Smash Bros. Brawl "very complete"

Apr 27th 2007 1:02PM (Joystiq)
Don't forget that this entire game will also have orchestrated music in Latin AND from what we have already (the trailer music) will be composed by Nobou Uematsu!

http://www.smashbros.com/en/music/index.html

If the entire game had music like that I will cry a little...

And who knows what sort of third party characters will show up. It is also happy to see Kojima being close to the development that is using one of his characters. I wonder what the stage he designed will look like...

NY Governor Spitzer spitting mad about games

Apr 19th 2007 8:00AM (Joystiq)
Spitzer isn't sitting mad about anything, this is just a publicity stunt on the wake of the VA shootings. The timing is way too perfect not for it to be anything else.

It doesn't matter if the state will eventually strike down the law in the courts and will have to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to pay legal fines, Spitzer will still look good in the eyes of the ingorant masses. Hell I'll wager that if that actually did happen most people wouldn't even notice that the law was striked down, since you know better that this would of never been put on any mainstream news outlet.

People are sheep, and Spitzer didn't get his head where it is now not knowing that. Spitzer gets to be the good guy by attacking an medium that the sheep know very little about, lose a little bit of the tax payers money, and then even if the laws is struck down people will still see him as the good guy. It is a win-win for Spitzer, all because people are too stupid not to see this.

The only person who is actually out to get video games is Jackie Thompson, and we all know that he is way too stupid and religious to attack them in a organized, effective manner. Be glad that Jackie is the only one who hates us for no discernible reason.

Over 14-years-old? Microsoft exec. says trade in your Wii

Mar 28th 2007 9:07PM (Joystiq)
Hi. My name is Ben. I am currently 20 years old and I own a Wii. I know 3 other people personally (I.E not by the internets) that are also 20+ years old and own a Wii.

There, I single handily made a Microsoft executive looks like a dumbass. Yay for me.

The argument that Nintendo is for kiddies is about as baseless as Sony is catoring to 10 year old girls with barbie horse adventure.

Penny arcade makes the argument about this perfectly:

So just shut up about it and enjoy games for what they are.

ASCII-based Dwarf Fortress is the future of video games?

Mar 28th 2007 11:59AM (Joystiq)
You missed the point Jack. Go read the article. What it means to be hardcore has nothing to do if you want to learn a 8 button layout or if you just want to play Wiisports.

As for the variety your argument there is also misguided. Yes it may have more variety but the majority of the games on the Xbox 360 are still just shooters and sports. This is the quantity over quality debate.

Go read the article Jack. Microsoft is blantently pro holloywoodization. This doesn't mean that there can be creative games on the Xbox 360, it means that to Microsoft they are just there to make it less apparent that people are only buying sports and shooters from them.

How the DS does 3D graphics

Mar 28th 2007 11:46AM (Joystiq)
The PSP was originally made to stop the success of the GBA. Too bad Nintendo made the DS and thus made the PSP the laughing stock of the industry to this day. If Sony had any forsight about the portable market the PSP would of been drastically different. Flip top, better battery life, more durable, etc. Nintendo learns from its hardware errors and improves upon it. Sony blantently ignores them in favor of appealing to people who have no idea what a portable system is in order to actually get sales, since any regular portable gamer like myself can see how stupid the PSP is.

As for the topic on hand, the ability of the DS to do both 2-d and 3-d equally and still maintain a portable system that is durable, long battery life, flip top, etc, is why it is such a success.

ASCII-based Dwarf Fortress is the future of video games?

Mar 28th 2007 11:35AM (Joystiq)
This game and the principal behind it is touching upon a much larger problem within the gaming culture and the industry.

If you look back into the history of gaming there have been shifts in thinking. When you look back into the 1st and second generation of games there was a huge explosion of creative, fun, and hard games. Once the market was created from these games a shift in thinking and business happened that allowed the idea that if you make a game based upon a movie license/slightly improved graphics without any decernible quality testing. A flood happened because of this thinking, leading to a overflow of shitty games and a eventual crash of the industry itself.

Once the third and 4th generation came along and put back together the industry in its proper mindset: Fun, creative, and hard games. Sure there were still movie tie in games but they didn't have much of a impact as before, the market was able to counter it with more quality then crap.

Then the 5th and 6th generation oddly enough went back to the holloywoodization of the industry. That flashy graphics and movie tie ins and sports games are more important then making a game fun, creative, or hard. When the top three best selling games of 2006 are a sports game, a movie tie in game, and another sports game, you better be worried. When a game like Okami only sells 200k in one year, you better be concered about where we are heading.

The breaking point will be the 7th generation, the one we are in right now. On one hand you have the Wii which allows for more creative and fun and new gameplay schemes to be had, and on the other you have the Xbox 360 which cators to only people who care more about graphics and shooting things to care if it is actually creativly interesting or not.

makes a more larger view then this. It may just open your eyes for once.

The Xbox 360 Elite is official, HDMI and 120GB for $479

Mar 28th 2007 12:27AM (Joystiq)
This looks like a ploy by Microsoft to try to make money off of the Xbox brand for once. 200 dollars for a 120 gig harddrive is nuts in any imagination.

This is also showing how Microsoft is admiting that HDMI is important for that .1% of the gaming population that can actually use it. Good job there apealing to the peer pressure of the minority and making Sony look good. We all know that is never a good thing.

If MS had any sense of the gaming industry it would of added features that gamers would of wanted, like a year of free Xbox Live with the console or a wifi adaptor. That would of gotten more attention and warrented the seemily useless third SKU.

Remember kids the financial half year ends on March 31st. My personal favorite time of the year when we get to see how much money Microsoft lost on the Xbox brand this time. Even with the extremely rare chance that they actually made a profit in the gaming division this half year it is still in the hole by 5 billion at least. YAY!
