Subway's video game ad reaches new low

Apr 4th 2007 8:16AM (Joystiq)
They probably "misrepresented" Pac-man to avoid too much attention from Namco's legal team. Also I'm sure they used Pac-man as a model because it's so iconic. Few video game franchises are so universally recognized as Pac-man still is today. Pac-man sounds are still used to represent playing video games in television and movies for the same reason. If modern game sounds were used it might not be as clear to the viewer that it is a video game, rather than just something on TV (although the controller in hand would be a pretty obvious hint).

Also NES style graphics (those graphics were way too good for an Atari) can be made on the cheap. Recreating a modern 3D game would have required quite a bit more of a time and money investment to convey the same message. Subway is not known for flashy, expensive, effects laden commercials. In fact most of it's commercials seem to consist of Jared showing off his poor acting skills, having some food related conversation with some other bad actor, usually some slender young woman who obviously would never in real life ever eat the Big Mac that Jared supposedly talks her out of eating.

How to be a fanboy

There's one missing from that list:
- A new feature on your console is an groundbreaking innovation, the same feature on another console, even if implemented better, is a lame gimmick that's been available in [insert obscure product] for decades.

Today's most modified game video: Super Doom Mario

Mar 8th 2007 12:51AM (Joystiq)
They're Puchuus from the anime Excel Saga. They're alien invaders that are super-cute and cuddly - until you hurt them, then they get ugly man-faces and gruff voices. I don't really know why they're mixed mized in with a bunch of Mario characters (there's certainly plenty other enemies they could have used) but they fit in well enough, I suppose.

To look up in Doom you would have to use a source port. Original Doom has no vertical movement - no free look, no jump and no crouch. Basically, just turn, use and fire.

InPhase 300GB holographic storage solution out the door

I wish companies would quit avoiding the data backup possibilities of their large storage mediums. Just how do they expect me to backup my hundreds of Gigabytes of pirated games, movies, software and porn!?

Remembering Segata Sanshiro, Sega Saturn's dutiful mascot

Feb 13th 2007 10:18PM (Joystiq)
"One thing that I never really understood about Segata was that he'd be helping people in one commercial, then beating up some kid in the next."

Notice he explodes villains but only beats up kids who aren't playing enough Sega Saturn. He's not a bully, he's merely beating some sense into the little delinquents for not playing games seriously enough.

'Secret passwords' lost in Kid Icarus VC

Feb 13th 2007 9:14PM (Joystiq)
Just to keep the record straight, Metroid's so-called "JUSTIN BAILEY ------ ------" code is not an intentional code. It's just a code that happens to pass the checksum and looks like it says something. That code has led to many long-held misconceptions such as Samus' hair being green; actually a result of the palette swap effect for the varia upgrade, which the code starts you out with. Varia suit is itself another misconception resulting from a poor translation; "varia suit" should have been "barrier suit", "maru-mari" is just Japanese for "circle ball", and chozo is Japanese for "carved statue". Of course, it seems the poor translations have now been embraced by Nintendo as part of the official Metroid lore.

The legitimate way to play without armor is to beat the game in under two hours and start a new game. You also start out without the "varia" and with a much more natural looking hair color.

Metroid does have one legitimate cheat code, however. Entering the password "NARPAS SWORD0 000000 000000" (those are zeros) starts you out with all items, infinite energy and infinite missiles. This also works on the versions included with Metroid Zero Mission and Metroid Prime. Hopefully the Virtual Console release will work as well.

Woman dies of 'water intoxication' after radio contest

Jan 14th 2007 7:44PM (Joystiq)
Many of you really need to learn the difference between stupidity and ignorance. I would wager most people have no clue drinking too much water can be fatal; she obviously did not. With health professionals recommending drinking eight or more glasses of water per day, it doesn't seem like something that could be dangerous. There are probably many, otherwise intelligent, people who have never heard of hyponatremia. Ridiculing her and making a jokes over her death because of the risks which she was not aware is extremely insensitive.

A tale of two mods: different PSP joysticks

Oct 17th 2006 11:40PM (Joystiq)
Why bother hacking stereo speakers? There's already several speaker add-ons for the PSP available:

And, yeah...none of them look all that portable.
