PETA's fur-hating, law-skirting, super-cute animal game
Mar 28th 2008 4:31PM (Joystiq)And maybe disease was the wrong word, but neither obesity or alcoholism are healthy conditions.

Mar 28th 2008 3:43PM (Joystiq)generic: The "personal property" destroying activists aren't really a part of PETA per se, and all PETA have (allegedly) done for them is provide legal support. There really isn't much else you can do for an "organization" that is made so it's impossible to even have a membership registry.

Mar 28th 2008 1:04PM (Joystiq)The average car is still a much faster and quieter machine than the average combine harvester, and the way that combines harvest grains and produce still allow a fair amount of time for whatever animals happen to be in the field to get out of its way. Roadkill is common in high-density traffic situations, around curves or in low-light situations, where even humans would have difficulties reacting in time (and frequently do, as many fail to brake or turn away in time to avoid the collision).
But what I'm sure many won't agree with me on is that I don't think the right to consume anything, at any cost, is some sort of sacrament. I don't think it's okay to kill an animal just because Anna Wintour said that its skin is the "in" thing to drape around your body this season, just like I believe it's not okay to buy yourself a fleet of Hummers or enough land to house a small tribe of people, yet keep it only to your immediate family. Sure, you CAN in today's society, but that too makes you an asshole.
That said, I've honestly had more luck "converting" people to veganism by quiet example than through loud, brash propagation. A few of my friends have taken the steps towards vegetarianism or veganism because they realized after I took the plunge myself that "hey, maybe it isn't that hard".

Mar 28th 2008 12:22PM (Joystiq)"No thanks, I'll pass on the steak, I'm a vegan."
"OH MY GOD YOU'RE A VEGAN LEAVE ME ALONE IT'S MY DECISION MY DECISION MY DECISION I WANT MY STEAK MY DECISION WAAAH WAAAH WAAAH"
"...Okaaay."
So really, ask yourself the next time someone mentions they're vegan and you start becoming agitated: are you really okay with it? Because your reactions never give off that impression.
Do I think we'd be better off if we didn't eat meat? Yeah, there's already a lot of proven health benefits to a well-balanced vegan diet, especially in comparison to the Standard American Diet, which at this point is a quagmire of high-fat, high-sodium, un-nutritious over-processed crap. (Crass generalization there, yes, I know, but do bear with me.) On top of that, I don't exactly find killing an agreeable thing, regardless of the species that's getting killed. Would you not object to your family being killed to feed someone else? If something were higher up on the food chain and was factory farming us for food, I'm pretty sure you wouldn't just sit still and take it quietly.
Oh, and by the way, the whole "combine harvester" argument? Yeah, we've all heard about that "study", but it's dishonest to quote is as utter truth when the guy who did it did so entirely on guesstimates and other random shit he pulled out of the air. Honestly, this is based on the idea that animals are some sort of non-instinctual victims of mass lobotomy. If I lived in the ground, and I heard something fucking loud coming? I'd run. Does that mean animals aren't killed growing produce? No, but it's a tragic accident, as opposed to intentional slaughter. It's also the reason why I try to buy as much organically grown produce as possible.

Mar 28th 2008 9:42AM (Joystiq)And frankly, I'm not the only one who's annoyed: most people who are involved with veganism through practice and outreach are annoyed as well, in particular other vegan/vegetarian women - and no, it has nothing to do with them being "uggos".
It gets in the way of the heart of the issue, namely, preventing cruelty and abuse against animals. It doesn't help that half of these models who pose for "rather go naked than wear fur" ads usually go back on their so-called "pledges" to stop wearing fur, making the whole thing seem cheap when it was already pretty tawdry.

Mar 28th 2008 9:28AM (Joystiq)I don't agree with PETA trying to sell my lifestyle choice with scantily clad people, regardless of whether they're models, porn stars, etc., etc.
As far as the game itself is concerned, I played it. It was cute, and fun to kill about five minutes with.
