My Garden 3DS preview: Sowing the seeds of doubt

Oct 7th 2010 3:56PM (Joystiq)
The 3D stuff sounds worrying. Like one of those kinks you only realise when you actually play something rather than looking at a single-screen demo.

Badly implemented 3D could be a serious buzz kill for 3DS. Nintendo should make sure third parties aren't going to spoil things. But I'm not sure there's anything that can be done about the strain due to focusing on the 3D screen and then the 2D screen, and then the 3D. That this is hard on the eye makes sense but I'm surprised Nintendo did not think of this.

LGJ: The 'Kinect' story, a case study in international trademark trickery

Joystiq knew about the Kinect name only five days before? It was up on USPTO for at least a number of weeks before E3 :P Just nobody was sure if it was or wasn't Project Natal, although there was a fair bit of speculation that it was.

Sony's PlayStation division sees sales increase, still operating at a loss

Jul 29th 2010 12:05PM (Joystiq)
The games business has actually be profitable for three quarters now.

The Network Products Segment recorded a loss, but if you listen to the whole investor webcast, you'll see they extract out the games unit's performance. They say it made a profit of 500m Yen - around $6m dollars.

Rumor: Natal-compatible 'Sonic Free Riders' coming to XBLA [update: it's retail]

Sounds very eyetoy.

Really. Sounds a lot like Antigrav or even some bits of Sega's own eyetoy games.

If all MS's skeletal tracking tech will enable is those same kinds of move/punch/kick type games, it'll have been an awful lot of fancy tech investment for an awfully incremental experience vs eyetoy. We'll see though.
