@jph89 Man, the BIG N and every other studio gets a bunch of hate from everything these days. EA makes a masterful game and people go around and make a petition to get the ending changed...back in cartridge days, you had to deal with it. And nobody whined about how things ended. I suppose that's the advent of trolls and babies though.
That said, remember when Nintendo first released the Wii and Ds? People all complained about the control style like the world was ending. And yet they both went on to sell massive amounts of consoles because they are AWESOME! Nintendo knows what they're doing, they add useless peripherals on to every system they have (power glove, wii condoms, 3ds circle pad).
For the most part they've been for sale, but now they've been pretty good about giving certain things for free or packaging them with games for no extra charge for the peri. Honestly, if you guys don't like free stuff and want to complain, give me your ambassador games while you're at it. I'm sure everyone QQed who got those for free too haha.
The original Harvest moon on Snes...was by far one of the most addictive games I have ever played. When I first started off, I was kinda iffy. There was nothing to fight, nothing to level up, nothing to buy in terms of potions. But as I got deep into it, got a wife, got a dog, got the golden hoe (my god....) and lots of other goodies. I found myself worrying about the beets getting cold in the winter, crop rotation to make sure something was growing no matter what season, getting angry as hell at the random rocks that would sprout up in the middle of my damn carrots! and above all else just generally falling deeper into the game itself. This is an example of a great game that came from, what most would say, a kind of bland idea.
I can't say this enough Atlus+ Shin megami tensei = win. Square who? Now to just twiddle my thumbs till Persona 5.....and maybe Grandia 4 if that company is still alive somewhere.
@Enterrer I completely agree. I personally enjoy games with no story that provide a challenge gameplay wise. This is partially why I am so committed to Nintendo. I die in Mario and I don't have to wait for a huge cutscene from the last auto save before I go again. I just get up, grind my teeth and get wrecking on them Goombas.
@dblue The japanese devs and publishers do not pick the voice actors. The american localization companies do, so you'll have to take it up with them. And as for the voice acting thing haha, they do use the same actors in like ever game lol. Bender = Marcus Fenix
I gave you a thumbs up but allow me to disagree. When I think of a game, I think of something that doesn't have me sitting around watching cut scenes all day with a few battles in between. If I start up a game, like Xenosaga, and I push one button...run for a bit....fight a monster (a meaning 1) and then find the first save point and I've played for 2 hrs already? Something's not right.
Story is great, but, as has been stated, there needs to be balance. True gamers don't crave to watch movies while holding a controller, we want to pwn something! We want to build our characters, change our costumes, slap the bosses, eat the weird food some npc says we shouldn't and that's where gameplay comes in. Jrpgs are about story driven plots for the most part which makes you feel like you're being swept up into something bigger than you are. This isn't a bad thing.
But the games that truly stand out as some of the best RPGs, Grandia, FFVI, any of the main "Tales of" games, any shin megami tensei game, it's about the character driving the plot. You driving the plot. I think that's what makes a good RPG. Not a story that shoves you into a situation but a story that evolves with you.
