Report: Capcom sees 'no distinction' between on-disc and off-disc DLC

Apr 3rd 2012 3:58PM (Joystiq)
@lagomorph

I guess it all comes down to the fact that the code you are "unlocking" is actually in your house, on your physical disc. It's the whole paying for something in your possession that is getting under peoples' skins.

@Timjoy Actually, they did add DLC back then. It was called Mega Man 2, Mega Man 3, etc.

Kid Icarus: Uprising prototype began on Wii and PC

Mar 30th 2012 6:04PM (Joystiq)
@KaBob799

The first prototype was probably fleshed out to work on the PC because maybe they wanted to demo it before they ported the prototype to the Wii. It may have been faster this way. It probably wasn't worth even putting the effort in moving forward and making it to the Wii (and subsequently the 3DS) if the initial presentation didn't get buy off.

Minecraft built $80 million in revenue

@ScruffyTheJanitor

I don't think anyone read a word I said (just blindly defended MC as usual). I didn't say they compete with each other in any way. What I referred to was the fact that when it comes to being marketable (making shirts, gear, food, etc) that Angry Birds has what it takes and Minecraft does not. Minecraft is not known by enough people to become a household name. And MC has peaked its sales and will dwindle each day.

And I didn't bring up the comparison, the author of the article did when they mentioned Rovio on the last line.

What month did they sell 1 million? I have been playing since Alpha...they never hit 1 million in a month that I remember.

Still, Angry Birds Space sold 10 million in opening days. Those sells just don't stop after a couple of days. So it is clear that Angry Birds outsells Minecraft by factors. It is also known by just about everyone and their dog, whereas Minecraft is not. THAT is why Angry Birds is marketable and Minecraft is not.

If Minecraft was SO marketable, how come their clothing / gear line haven't taken off like crazy? Why is it that when MC fans saw the Lego set (and it's price) they were just "meh"?

Minecraft is a fad and has crossed its peak. The android version isn't selling well. Neither is the iOS version. The Xbox version wont either with a fat $20 price tag.

What growth does it possibly have to stay relevant? Gamers get bored quick when the next new thing comes around.

@kcswanko Actually, Minecraft IS tapering. Most sales occured between beta and release. That is when they saw the biggest spike. For example, it only took a few months to go from 1 million to 3 million customers. However, since then, it has taken longer to go from 3 million to 4, and even longer to go from 4 to 5. They have ran out of customers. Everyone who is interested has already bought it and they do not have a reoccuring revenue model.

So what's next? Scrolls? Or Notch's space game? Good luck with those, many believe that Notch hit gaming lottery with Minecraft, and Mojang has said so themselves that they are not interested in making sequels.

So tell me what, exactly, makes you think that Minecraft is just getting *started*?

@Jenks

Which one is for gamers? The one that runs on JAVA and barely runs on top end computers or the game that actually runs on all kinds of devices?

5 million new registered users last month? Are you talking about paying customers or just people registering for the free Classic mode? If paying, then you are sorely mistaken. They *just* hit the 5 million paying customers last month. It wasn't 5 million in a month, it was 5 million over a couple of years.

I'm not sure that companies are understanding the difference between Angry Birds and Minecraft. Minecraft took a couple of years to sell 5 million. Angry Birds Rio hit 10 million downloads in a couple of days. Angry Birds Space (which has only been out a few days) just hit 10 million downloads as well. How many copies of Minecraft for iOS were sold???

Point is, Minecraft *was* hot but has cooled dramatically.
