Iwata: 3DS likely won't sell below production cost

Jun 21st 2010 3:43PM (Joystiq)
Economics of scale people.

The 3DS will likely come out at $200-$250, no less than $179 and absolutely no more than $279, with a very likely price point being $229. It will likely come with a pack-in or downloadable token for a game to showcase the 3D effect. Probably not Kid Icarus but a shooting gallery minigame or something.

Enough early adopters will buy it at that price. Throughout 2011 it will stay $229. If sales aren't high enough they will pack-in Nintendogs and Cats with it. The DSi and DSi XL prices will stay the same and will not be going down any time soon so as to not cut into the sales.

The price point of $229 will probably be not that much higher than production cost so I wouldn't complain. Once it's been in production a while that will come down but until then, expect that this will be the most expensive Nintendo handheld ever.

Oh and also, if Nintendo gets word that people aren't happy with that high of a price, there will be artificial shortages.

Sonic Adventure on PSN and XBLA won't venture outside of 4:3 aspect ratio

@shaurz

It's not too hard. It's too cost prohibitive. Yes, there will probably be options to stretch/clip it but that's about it.

In order to have actual widescreen support, they would not only have to change the code to display that area but they would have to change the entire game to have area there to display. In some places it would be easy, but in others it would require level design changes and scripted event changes and then testing to make sure that the whole thing functions properly. All of this takes time and money to do.

This isn't a true port, and it's certainly not an improved rewrite (ala Super Mario All-Stars), it's part emulation and part translation layer to make the Xbox/PS3 run Dreamcast code. Any changes in the code are going to be extremely minor. If you don't like it, then DON'T BUY IT. I will not be buying SA and will be considering CT but I know that if they bring out Chu Chu Rocket for $10 then I'll be buying it despite already having it on the DC.

Rayman Origins begins episodic journey 'this year'

I'm surprised that it's coming out on PSN after Kevin Butler badmouthing characters without arms or legs at E3.

This could be interesting. It almost reminds me of Kirby Canvas Course in a way.

I hope they don't have the same techno music as the first game. Taking the original music and just adding an all-too-loud drum beat isn't innovative, it's just annoying.

I know I'll probably take some heat for this post but deep in your heart you know I'm right.

3DS specs revealed (specifications, not spectacles)

It better have AA otherwise playing DS games designed for 256x192 on a 320x240 screen is going to look like a jagged mess.

Then again, even the GBA had smoothing routines for playing old GB/GBC games.

If you're the type of person to replay Double Dragon occasionally you're probably aware that it was delisted from XBLA.

I too loved The Maw but there were several things that made me stop playing 'Splosion Man and difficulty wasn't one of them.

1. Stupid epilepsy inducing load screens. Forget about playing this in a dark room unless you intend on passing out.

2. The "skip level" dialog coming a few milliseconds after you've started playing that life instead of before you started playing. This meant that that life was a wash if you didn't want to skip because your timing was screwed.

3. No real sense of advancement or exploration. Once you had played enough to learn the mechanics that was pretty much it. Sure there were a few new enemies added and some boss fights but it was for the most part more generic sameness and your only reward for completing a level was the damn load screen.

'Otomedius Excellent' brings cute bullet hell to Xbox this winter

Jun 16th 2010 7:37PM (Joystiq)
@killdash9

It's not a bullet hell shooter? Now I'm actually interested. I like shooters and all but bullet hell shooters are just meh to me. Konami's Life Force (aka Salamander) is one of my favorite shooters. It's a shame that they never localized the Playstation/Saturn version.

Oh and for the record, they did show it at E3 1997 but it never materialized as a final product. Joystiq, if you have information confirming the release of this other than it being shown on Konami's booth let us know, otherwise you're just going to break our hearts.
