Rayman Origins is actually profitable for Ubisoft

Feb 15th 2012 7:01PM (Joystiq)
Nice, good news! Now, they just have to license that incredible UbiArt Framework engine out to other developers to make their own ridiculously beautiful 2D names. Konami, I'll wait patiently while you buy it to build the next 2D Castlevania game.

Game Music: Enhancement Through Limitation

@Hookshot Mallard I think you miss the point. It's not a debate of chiptune vs. orchestral music. It's a debate of composition and how music is used in gaming. In your example, the argument would be "Is the main theme from Zelda a better composed track than modern game compositions?" and I think even if the Legend of Zelda theme was a brand new track, composed and orchestrated today, it would still be head and shoulders above most new games' themes.

I'll point to the Ballad of the Goddess from Zelda: Skyward Sword. I didn't love that game, but that music stuck in my head far after I was finished with it. I can't say that about much other music from games in the last few years.

Game Music: Enhancement Through Limitation

@ShinAntonio I have to say I disagree with your assessment. Upon first listen, I wasn't overly impressed with the Mega Man 9 soundtrack either, but overtime the music has definitely grown on me and now I consider it one of the best in the series. It all comes down to the composition, and the music in MM9 is far more appealing, catchy and unique than most of the other soundtracks coming out of games today.

@eat it If you've never gone walking down a dark hallway with an orchestra following you in real life, you simply aren't important enough.

Street Fighter X Tekken: Welcome to the festival

Unfortunately with this game coming out during Mass Effect time, I won't be able to give it the time it deserves, and thus won't be buying it. However, I'm possibly going to get the Vita version when I grab that system somewhere down the line.

Us American hardcore gamers would never be caught dead in a GAME. I mean, it has a pink sign! Eww, cooties!

Kid Icarus: Uprising stays put with bundled stand [update: coming to all regions]

Jan 12th 2012 12:43PM (Joystiq)
I say it's a great idea, I played a Kid Icarus: Rising demo at PAX East last year and my left hand was cramping and hurting within seconds. I'm pretty sure that's why Nintendo's making this, not for the 3D effect.

If I'm going to be playing it at home, this stand will be ideal. Plus, it's free, so what's the big hub-ub? At least they're not charging extra for it, like the nubbin' appendage.

Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D served Feb. 21 in North America, March 8 in Europe

@baby sea tuna Pretty much. I was excited for this up until they announced the MGS HD Collection... and then I bought it a month ago... and have been enjoying it ever since...

Soulcalibur V advertisement debunked, junked

But... if that's fake... doesn't that technically make Namco seem even worse? Just re-assuring they're exploiting their ladies' boobs without also exploiting their dudes' crotches?

It should be equal opportunity exploitation.

Best of the Rest: Griffin's picks of 2011

Jan 4th 2012 7:18PM (Joystiq)
Thank you, Griffin, for citing the same major problem that I had with Skyward Sword. It was a good game, which could've been even better if not for it being so unnecessarily stretched out. Plenty of entree, stuffed with too much filler.
