Nintendo "Revolution" now called "Wii" [update 6]

Apr 27th 2006 1:43PM (Joystiq)
Well I'm sure you've all heard the news of the new name. I guess I was still holding out hope that they wouldn't change it at all. Besides the clever wordplay (Wii = We, as evident in the press release), my opinion is that it's a mistake.

I've known about the Wii name for about 10 minutes now, and I already feel silly saying it. It almost plays even more into the childish stereotype all the big bad gamers have about Nintendo. The spelling itself is counterproductive as well. I know they were trying to be creative, and they reason that "Wii" transcends language barriers and needs no abbriviation. Well from what I can notice, other languages call the systems by their 'complicated' English names just fine, and thats what they know them as. And sure, everyone can pronouce it fine, but how many non-gamers are going to look at it the first time and call it "why" instead of "we"?

Sheesh, and talk about playing into the hands of detractors. This name is gonna be so easy to crack puns about and make fun of...

I truely think the Revolution name and brand has gotten so strong over the past year that many many gamers will still call it the Revolution. I know I will.

Viva la Revolution!!

And don't worry Nintendo, I still love ya.

I got excited for a minute and thought a US version was being released...

Rumor: Revolution to be renamed this Thursday

Mar 22nd 2006 1:02AM (Joystiq)
I agree that chaging the name now would be a mistake. Nintendo already has built up a fairly substantial brand recognition with Revolution, and the system hasn't even launched yet. Sure, its just us internet fanboys, but that name awareness permiates out into the mainstream through people we talk to. Changing the name now would hurt that brand name power thats building up, and even could cause a tad bit of confusion among casual gamers.

Video game history is peppered with mistakes

This may be nitpicking, but the Mortal Kombat blood code they list is wrong. I all of a sudden became popular in grade school for knowing the infamous blood code. It's ABACABB at the long Code of Honor screen.

*sigh* I love that game...

I think is looks pretty darn cool, and does eliminate the need to follow the trail of a cord to make sur eyou unplug the right thing.

Now the grammar of the post, thats another thing. Whats up with that first sentence?? Brutal!
