I said in the thread last night that I also think the subscription service is a great idea. If I were in charge (Oh, me and my fantasies!) here's how I would set it up:
• You have the option to join the subscription service of just outright buy the games like you can now. If you're a member of the subscription service and you like a game enough, you can BUY it at a reduced rate (say, $3.00 for NES games rather than $5.00) • Nintendo should, eventually, at least, have a "bargain bin" of old games that really aren't that great, but you could buy them at a reduced rate, subscriber or not. Does anyone remember the game Xexlyz on the NES? I'd love to play that again, even though it really sucked. For a dollar or two, I'd totally go for it. Seriously, does anyone rememberthat game, though? Even Google doesn't. • They should STILL offer demos. Make them playable for 5 minutes or so. • Have a "Game Of The Month". Hell, have a "Free Game Of The Week" ala iTunes. It's not like they'd lose THAT much by offering a beloved classic for a week in the long run, furthermore some obscure title. • Clean up the interface. It sucks and it's clunky right now. • Offer original content seperately. Why? To really make people understand that they're actually getting something new. Offer demos and DLs only. • Add online multiplayer content to the obvious games. Christ, some of these games are so simple, *I* could do it. If nothing else, it'd make a great college/university intern program and they get cheap labor. • And most importantly, LINE UP 3RD PARTY GAMES! Throw 'em ALL up there! It's not like they don't exist by the thousands.
Ultimately, I want to be able to scroll through a HUGE (vertical) list like I do in my iTunes library. Do I expect that now? Hell no. But this time next year, if the VC isn't a HELL of a lot better and more user friendly, I'll have to admit it's an overall failure...and one of the biggest selling points of the Wii, for me, was/is the VC.
As someone who is only 24(!) and draws a lot (and for a living), I know how he feels. I don' have Arthritis, but after a nice, long session drawing, my wrist in particular will crack and pop sooooo many times. I figure I'm a shoe-in for arthritis down the line, sadly.
That said, if he wants to play games he'll likely never have a shot at again, I'd say Viewtiful Joe is a good one to play while he still can. It's hours of button-mashing and controller throwing fun!
If the Wii takes off (and it's looks very likely right now), you can put money down that MS releases some sort of motion sensing controller. They probably feel that they can get away with it, since it wouldn't be the first time MS (or especially Sony, who added a second analog stick) changed their controller design.
Motion sensing IS the future. It really baffles my mind when I see people hating on the Wii (and PS3, to a lesser extent) for trying to advance an industry that has frankly become horribly stale and victim to a huge corporate mentality. Do these people really think they're going to get their virtual reality games of the future by playing with just a joypad?
A lot of you people screaming about bias (I'm looking your way, Sony fanboys) REALLY need to sit down and determine the difference between objectivity and neutrality in reporting. Joystiq isn't neutral (and that's a good thing), but they are fairly objective for a blog. Just because there is a TON of negative Sony news and LOTS of positive Nintendo news doesn't mean Joystiq is supressing positive Sony news or negative Nintendo news.
When we do get "anti-"Nintendo or MS posts, I don't see the amount of sheer venom pointed toward the messenger as I do from Sony's loyal base.
I've said it before and I'll say it again- Sony fanboys strike me as conservatives, in that regard. They want a pretend notion of "balance" (neutrality) when they hear news that they don't like.
If you REALLY want to show that Joystiq is biased, you have to what your Republican counterparts have failed to do for decades– show us HOW Joystiq is biased by proving that there is a ton of "anti"-Nintendo or MS news that they're choosing not to report. If you can't, then there is no bias. It's as simple as that.
Todd and a brain, still, proof that you don't need one to live.
I wish my fellow Americans weren't so f-cking stupid as to think that just because a game doesn't have blood, swearing and BIG BOOM-BOOMS, tha it's a "kiddie game".
That was a supremely stupid ad. I understand WHY they made it and it's purpose. But it was pretensious, grossly uninformative and really just a huge cliche. You can practically hear the Sony board execs in their crisp, pressed suits talking about how cool and "hip" and "leet" this ad will be.
Basically, it stinks of having been created by out of touch morons trying to be cool.
Why not a Virtual Console subscription service?
