Microsoft Kin notifications have up to fifteen minute delay

Apr 13th 2010 3:19AM (Engadget)
So where's my outrage supposed to be placed again? This is exactly how I have my updates on my Android phone set for EXACTLY THE REASONS CITED. Battery life is awful if you have the networks checking more often than 15 minutes, and if you check the individual apps they even recommend 15 minutes at the minimum for not affecting battery life. When I need it more frequently I hit the Refresh button. This sounds completely legitimate to me and completely reasonable. Microsoft's done a couple notably awful things with WP7, but it feels like now everyone's searching for reasons to take them down a peg whenever they show off something cool. Well, this isn't one of them, IMO.

Also, keep in mind people, this is social networks, not SMS or other things meant to go DIRECTLY to you. This is just generalized, non-specific updates from your friends that you, yourself, will only look at when you bother to pull your phone out of your pocket and check it. That's really not so bad.

Finland to do away with regular snail mail; replaces postal service with scanned email copies

Apr 5th 2010 5:17PM (Download Squad)
See, I think this makes perfect sense from the perspective of forcing those with concerns about privacy to switch to electronic communication. Don't like your mail being opened? Complain to the provider that they need to switch to digital. Once enough people do, that's one less company sending paper mail to be scanned. It could eventually change all delivery to parcels only.

Mozilla Ubiquity dies an incredibly quiet death

Feb 22nd 2010 1:30AM (Download Squad)
If true, this is very disappointing. I use Ubiquity quite a bit on my computers and find it much faster than alternative options for accessing this type of information. I hope the other reports in the comments are more accurate.

And yes, I do recall this being planned initially as part of 3.5, I believe, then pushed to 4.0. Chrome arguably has something similar but much less advanced in its address bar, and that was the plan for Ubiquity. So I'm pretty sure they'll implement it just to keep up.

Fair enough, with that in mind I withdraw my complaint. But if you ever recommend the executable, you'll be hearing from me again! ;)

Yes, but what it does isn't my issue, it's what malware and background processes it installs with it that's my concern.

WheatherBug? Seriously? Anything from WeatherBug's one of the first things I uninstall from a client's systems. Is their gadget any less repugnant?

Samsung Moment unboxed!

Oct 25th 2009 7:58PM (Engadget)
Will have to wait and see how this turns out, but I just might consider buying one of these to replace my Touch Pro, assuming I have the funds. While I've loved my TP, it's time for a change, and Android's looking better by the day. Assuming all the functionality I need is there, and assuming a 2.0 upgrade hits or is hacked in fast, I may just go for it.

Swag Sunday: Metroid Prime Trilogy (Wii) [update]

Sep 20th 2009 9:24PM (Joystiq)
For me, simply being proven wrong that Metroid really DOES work beautifully in 3D. While I still prefer the 2D games, Metroid Prime was one of the best-feeling games ever, and getting inside that suit and experiencing the world from her eyes turned out to be amazing.

New rogue antivirus app has a hate-on for Malwarebytes

Sep 3rd 2009 1:08AM (Download Squad)
To be fair, MBAM usually can't remove these infections alone, because they already block it from running. MBAM, Spybot, etc. all get blocked from running by the newest fake AV apps. Really, the only surefire bet for most is to boot into safe mode, run ComboFix first (usually renaming it to something like spaghetti.exe), let it do its thing, and then run MBAM to clean up the rest.
