I've clocked about 40 hours with this game. The only people complaining about it are the ones who haven't sat and played it for any length of time. It's funny, inventive, and lot more complex than it appears. The island is small for a reason.

In terms of the DLC, it's free because it's a simple add on. Some new costumes, different weapons, some new types of bears to kill. Were they to add significant content, like Borderlands does, I wouldn't hesitate to buy it.
