Ubisoft confirms Red Steel redesign in the works

Jun 27th 2006 7:21PM (Joystiq)
Not because I'm a Nintendo fanboy, but I have to say that my expectations are pretty high for the Wii. With games like this that wouldn't be nearly as good on a traditional control scheme, I think they'll attract some new people to the fold.

Add to that the fact that Nintendo will actually make it out before the next Sony console. The 360 will really be no competition for Wii in Japan. It's also hard to believe that all of the good press that the big N has gotten over the "gimmicky" DS won't help move units when Wii is finally available.

It also doesn't hurt that we'll be able to buy Wii with a handful of games for the price of a 360. I could buy a $250 Wii and TWO DS Lites for the estimated cost of the PS3.

TV-B-Gone baseball hat

Jun 24th 2006 12:47PM (Engadget)
Confession Time:

I really only read this story because I thought it said TV-B Gone Baseball BAT. I was secretly hoping to see pictures of a TV being beaten by (well-insulated) baseball bats.

Still, it sounds like fun.

Oh, and Johnny, the great thing about humor is that it's subjective. Your one opinion doesn't invalidate the humor of this project. I personally don't find Jerry Seinfeld very funny, so by your precedent, I've invalidated your sense of humor. Have a great day.

Wardriver arrested for snagging coffee shop signal

Jun 24th 2006 12:39PM (Engadget)
Disclaimer: I'm on dialup at the moment, so I'm not going to spend the FOREVER it would take to verify this story:

A co-worker informed me that the police checked into this guy because he was hanging around, and picked him up because he was some sort of sex offender on the lam. Maybe what he told me about was a different story, but if this is true, he wasn't really arrested for bandwidth usage; that's just how they found him.

Also, couldn't one argue that his behavior constitutes loitering in a sense? Regardless of his bandwidth consumption, he's still taking up space in their parking lot, and never even attempting to be a customer.

Maybe if he lived in an apartment above the coffee shop and use their bandwidth without loitering, I could sympathize. However, this sounds to me a lot like overreaction from the "Data/IP/The Internets just wants to be free!" crowd. Just because he was engaging in the free exchange of information doesn't make him a saint.

NYTimes: games industry is taking a beating

Jun 20th 2006 8:59AM (Joystiq)
In response, EA, T2, and Activision should make a game about how NYT's stock price is close to being at a low for the the past decade.

(Yes, I realize that it's the Times' job to report news; I just find humor in NYT pointing out financial trouble in other industries when they're not in that great shapes themselves.)

Joystiq Poll: Next console market share

May 3rd 2006 11:44AM (Joystiq)
To all the people who think that the survey is loaded:

Do you know what "status quo" means? It's simply the current state of affairs. While it was a slighty more "intellectual" way of saying it, the Sony choice basically reads "Sony (No change in market dominance)".

It's not Joystiq's fault if you don't understand this common phrase. It's also no their fault if you're somehow paranoid enough to think Joystiq adding this phrase as some sort of subliminal suggestion war against Sony, convincing people that Sony represents market stagnation in some way.

Thus spoke the Xenosaga Episode III chicks

It's probably also worth noting that Xenosaga III has a release date now: July 6

Nerve stimulator may help chronic hiccup sufferers

Jan 12th 2006 2:38PM (Engadget)
I happen to have chronic hiccups. Though I typically only have one or two per hour, I've had them for at least the past four or five years. I've had a couple days where I'll have hiccups every few seconds for hours on end.

You may not think it's such a big deal until you realize that your abdominal muscles are twitching every time. After the first hour or so, they start to burn and cramp, and there's nothing you can do to stop them from twitching. I can't imagine what it's like to deal with this all the time.
