Sep 22nd 2010 12:13PM (Joystiq)Sounds like you're thinking about the story of Enoch in the bible. The Book of Enoch, which is not part of the bible (see comments above), contains some of the earlier stories of fallen angels (the "watchers" -- think Ben Affleck in Dogma), which are later folded into the overall mythology of the devil in Judeo-Christian culture.
Remember, in the old testament, "satan" is more a job title (referring to a sort of prosecuting angel) or a class of beings than a specific entity. This role was elaborated and expanded (attributing some of god's acts to it/them) in some books composed around the same time as the Book of Enoch, and the (separate) idea espoused in Enoch that some angels had fallen and were thus acting against the interests of god was also gaining popularity.
In both cases, this seems to be a function of people growing uncomfortable with the idea of the god of the bible doing some of the really harsh things that are depicted there -- so folks were looking for a heavenly source for evil that was separate from the god they worshiped. These ideas took hold most strongly in Christian circles, although there was a great deal of controversy for quite a long time within Christianity over them. (Have you ever looked at a gnostic creation myth?)
Of course, that all being said, we're talking about a Japanese video game interpretation of the Book of Enoch, so it's going to bear at most a tangential relationship to the source material. I mean, have you ever seen some of the things that happen to religious literature when it gets turned into anime? : )
Edwin and Enoch: El Shaddai's official jeans
Sep 20th 2010 2:52PM (Joystiq)The Book of Enoch, while awesome and in fact pretty psychedelic in its own right, is not part of any actual modern canon, or as far as I know, any recorded historical one. It belongs to a class of literature referred to as pseudepigrapha -- generally books written at a (relatively) late period but which are attributed to ancient writers.
While these texts are not canonical, they often present mythological or theological concepts that are relevant to contemporary and later religious developments -- for example, the modern notion of the devil is almost entirely foreign to the depictions of satan in the bible, but clearly related to the content of pseudepigraphic works like Enoch.

Jul 1st 2008 11:55AM (AOL TV)It seemed a pretty odd choice for ABC Family to park in an early slot. I do hope, however, that the move doesn't presage any more drastic action by ABC Family's standards and practices people...
