I'm sure Sony fans will love this, but to the average consumer, even those who might normally consider the PS3, this is does nothing to persuade them to want the Move. It's just taking cheap shots at Kinect, just like Sony took cheap shots at the Wii when it released.
4 years later, and Sony's pushing a complete bite of the Wii's motion controls.
Consumers like technology that reaches for the future. The Wiimote, the Nintendo DS, the Iphone, all of these are examples of technology that reach for the future, all devices offering something that no one else was doing.
The Kinect does the same. No one's doing a a true body controlled interface. If it delivers even 75% of what the idea promises (and Dance Central makes a damn strong case that's possible), it'll sell like hotcakes.
And Sony will end up playing catch up again, just like they're doing with Wii-like motion control now.
Lastly, if Sony wasn't concerned with enthusiasm for Kinect, there would be no need for these kinds of ads. Likewise for their ads against Iphone games.
I'm guessing that they're doing this for one of the two following reasons, or both:
ESPN and/or other content providers are putting MS over a barrel for their content (just like they do cable/sat providers)
They're trying to make up for lost revenues caused by Gold members choosing to pay for their subscriptions via discounted LIVE cards as opposed to pay full price directly to MS.
I could understand either scenario given the fact that I previously worked in the cable industry AND I only pay my subscription with LIVE cards I find on sale, but I don't think its a wise decision. Most potential newcomers to LIVE aren't going to make the decision to join based on discounted 12 month LIVE card prices, they're going to decide based on the retail price, and $60 just sounds steep.
It works out to $5 a month, but people aren't going to care for that math when they have to pay for it upfront.
Way entice those new Xbox gamers that Kinect's likely to bring your way Microsoft! And this should REALLY help your evangelists out there....
