With WoW being the so called 'benchmark' for MMOs these days, being innovative and successful is tough. The general MMO community has this idea that mechanics must follow the 'benchmark' or its not worth their time, and we all know most if not all MMOs only get one chance to impress most players.
On October 1, 2007, a mere six days after the release of Halo 3, Microsoft and Bungie announced that Bungie was splitting off from its parent and becoming a privately-held Limited Liability Company named Bungie LLC. As outlined in a deal between the two, Microsoft would retain a minority stake and continue to partner with Bungie on publishing and marketing both Halo and future projects, with the Halo intellectual property belonging to Microsoft.
Would you rather get the emotes free and pay for Issue updates? NCSoft has been doing the MT thing for a couple of years now and they're not the only company to stack on MTs with monthly subscriptions. It's just a matter of 'worth' this emote pack is to a player, no one is forcing them to buy it.
